Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Product Design Engineer
Document your engineering degree carefully
TN classification requires a degree directly related to product design engineering, such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. If your credential is from a non-U.S. institution, get a formal equivalency evaluation before applying. Admissions officers at the border do not accept ambiguous documentation.
Target employers with dedicated immigration support
Search for companies that have an in-house HR or legal team experienced with TN filings. Employers unfamiliar with TN often confuse it with H-1B and assume a lottery is required, which delays or kills offers. Ask directly during the offer stage whether they've sponsored TN visas before.
Align your job title to USMCA engineer categories
Titles like 'Product Designer' without 'Engineer' in the offer letter can trigger scrutiny at the border or consulate. Ask your employer to use a USMCA-aligned title in the offer letter and ensure the duties description reflects engineering-level specialty work, not generalist design tasks.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready employers
Search for Product Design Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for employers open to TN visa sponsorship. This saves time you'd otherwise spend screening out companies that only run H-1B or PERM-based processes for international hires.
Prepare for port-of-entry filing as a Canadian
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a U.S. land border or pre-clearance airport, without needing a visa stamp. Bring your job offer letter, degree transcripts, and professional credentials in a single organized packet. CBP officers make an immediate determination, so gaps in documentation cause same-day denial.
Confirm employer support letter requirements before your start date
For TN status, your employer will prepare a support letter documenting your job offer and qualifications that meet TN requirements. For Canadian citizens, you'll present this letter at the U.S. port of entry; for Mexican citizens, your employer will submit it with your application to a U.S. consulate. Confirm this preparation is completed before your entry date, since entering without proper TN documentation creates status violations.

Find Product Design Engineer JobsProduct Design Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Design Engineer role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, provided the role fits within the USMCA engineering professional category and requires at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. The job duties must reflect specialty-level engineering work. Generalist design roles that don't require an engineering degree are regularly challenged at the border or consulate.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Product Design Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which makes it far more predictable than H-1B for engineering roles. Canadians can obtain TN status at a port of entry the same day they present qualifying documents. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a lottery with an April selection date and an October start. For roles that clearly meet USMCA engineering criteria, TN is faster and more accessible than H-1B for Canadians and many Mexican nationals.
Can I search for Product Design Engineer roles that specifically offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, which means you spend hours screening listings only to find the employer won't sponsor international candidates. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this use case, letting you search Product Design Engineer roles filtered by TN visa sponsorship so you only see employers who are already open to hiring Canadians and Mexican nationals through the TN process.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must issue a detailed offer letter that includes your job title, a description of duties that maps to the USMCA engineering category, your proposed start date, and your offered compensation structure. For Mexican nationals, the employer may also need to support a consular appointment. The letter is the core document CBP officers or consular officers evaluate, so vague or generic descriptions of duties frequently cause denials.
What happens if my Product Design Engineer title doesn't match USMCA engineering categories exactly?
CBP officers and consular officials assess TN eligibility based on the job title and duties, not your personal background alone. Titles like 'Product Designer' or 'UX Engineer' without clear engineering degree requirements in the offer letter create classification problems. Work with your employer to revise the title to reflect an engineering function and ensure the duties section explicitly describes engineering-level specialty work. USCIS has issued requests for evidence on ambiguous engineering titles even for otherwise qualified applicants.
