Match your degree field to the role
TN visa classification for Management Consultants requires a degree in a business-related or relevant field. A computer science degree supporting a project management role may draw scrutiny at the port of entry. Align your credential framing to the job description before applying.
Build a targeted employer short list
Focus on mid-to-large consulting firms and enterprise companies with dedicated HR or legal teams. These employers have handled TN filings before and won't need educating on the process, which shortens the time between offer and start date.
Request a USMCA support letter early
Canadians activate TN status at the port of entry, not through USCIS. Ask your employer to draft the TN support letter before you negotiate your start date. The letter must detail your role, your qualifying degree, and the temporary nature of the engagement.
Use Migrate Mate to filter TN-ready postings
Searching general job boards surfaces roles with no sponsorship history. Migrate Mate filters specifically for employers open to TN sponsorship for Project Management Consultant roles, cutting out outreach to companies that will decline before reading your resume.
Clarify PMP certification versus degree requirements
A PMP certification alone does not satisfy the TN specialty occupation degree requirement. USCIS and CBP look for an academic credential in a relevant field. Certifications strengthen your candidacy but can't substitute for the bachelor's degree the TN category requires.
Prepare for Mexican-national TN cap constraints
Mexican nationals are subject to a 5,500 annual TN allocation, processed through USCIS rather than at the border. File early in the fiscal year and confirm your employer understands the I-129 petition route rather than assuming the same port-of-entry process Canadians use.
Project Management Consultant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Consultant role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Management Consultant is an approved USMCA TN occupation, and Project Management Consultant roles routinely qualify under that category. The key requirement is that you hold a relevant bachelor's degree and that the position involves providing management advisory services rather than simply executing project tasks on a team.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Project Management Consultant jobs?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadians, so approval isn't subject to the randomness that defines H-1B. Canadians can activate TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires a petition filed months in advance and a lottery selection. For most Canadian and Mexican consultants with a qualifying offer, TN is the faster, more predictable path.
Where should I look for Project Management Consultant jobs with TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces Project Management Consultant roles at employers open to TN visa sponsorship, so you're not spending time on outreach to companies that will decline at the offer stage. Standard job boards don't filter by sponsorship willingness, which makes the process far less efficient.
Can my employer file TN status for me without prior immigration experience?
Canadians don't require employer USCIS filings since TN is activated at the port of entry with a support letter. However, the letter must meet CBP standards: it must confirm your role, your degree, the temporary nature of employment, and the business rationale. Employers without prior TN experience sometimes produce letters that are incomplete, which can cause delays at the border.
How long does it take for a Mexican national to get TN status as a consultant?
Mexican nationals must file an I-129 petition through USCIS, which typically takes two to four months under standard processing. Premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. Unlike Canadians, Mexican nationals cannot activate TN at the border. Build this timeline into your start date negotiation so your employer sets a realistic onboarding date from the outset.
