Job Summary
The AD&D System Safety Engineer defines and leads system safety strategy for early‑phase aircraft and system concepts and is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of designs being developed by the Advanced Design & Development team. This role will focus on the initial phases of aircraft development—ideation, hypothesis generation, stakeholder engagement, technology maturation, and conceptual design. This role will develop safety‑driven architectures, allocate safety and reliability requirements, and establish re‑usable safety cases and analysis patterns that can be carried forward into detailed design and certification programs. This position involves acting as a safety architect and technical leader and collaborating with cross-functional teams, including aero, airframe, systems, software, and certification engineers as well as flight test, flight operations, and IT, to ensure that novel technologies and operating concepts can be matured into certifiable, operationally viable products.
This role will work with small, agile teams to explore new user value propositions, challenge the status quo, and evolve ideas into developed systems with validated architectures and requirements ready for detailed design and certification planning.
Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Define AD&D safety engineering strategy, processes, and methods aligned with core Product Development’s System Safety and Systems Engineering practices.
- Conduct system safety analyses to support early development design decisions such as system architectures, availability, integrity, monitoring, and other safety requirements.

- Conduct and document aircraft and system level safety analyses – specifically Aircraft Functional Hazard Assessments, Preliminary Aircraft Safety Assessments, System Functional Hazard Assessments, Preliminary System Safety Assessments, Particular Risk Assessments, Common Cause Assessments, and Particular Risk Assessments.
- Develop and review system schematics.
- Develop and validate reliability, maintenance, and safety requirements.
- Participate in trade studies and design reviews.
- Perform reliability and safety trade studies for alternative architectures and design concepts.

- Mentor and coach AD&D and Systems Engineers in safety driven design practices, including early phase use of ARP4754B/4761A and runtime assurance.
- Perform reliability analysis of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies using RIAC NPRD-2011, NSWC-11, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
- Perform reliability analysis of electrical assemblies using MIL-HDBK-217-F2, RIAC NPRD-2011, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
- Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of electrical and/or mechanical assemblies per MIL-STD-1629A, SAE ARP4761, RIAC FMD-2013, RIAC Reliability Toolkit, and/or equivalent.
- Support safety of flight determination for first flights.
- Identify Failure Modes and Effects Test (FMET) cases and support simulation and flight FMET.
- Review vendors’ reliability analysis and FMEA submittals for completeness and accuracy.
- Perform Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and common cause analyses (CCAs) of electrical and/or mechanical systems per SAE ARP4761.
- Development of tasks and procedures for flight crew and periodic maintenance requirements necessary for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate closely with and support the work of system and software architects, systems development assurance, systems engineering, electrical and mechanical systems design, flight deck designers, human factors engineers, and flight test.
- Travel up to 25% may be required.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a System Safety Engineer
Align your credentials to TN engineer requirements
Your degree must be in engineering or a directly related field. A general science degree without an engineering focus has been refused at ports of entry. Gather your transcripts and any credential evaluations before you start applying.
Target industries with established safety engineering programs
Defense contractors, aerospace manufacturers, rail operators, and nuclear facilities routinely hire System Safety Engineers and have legal teams familiar with TN filings. Avoid startups or employers who have never sponsored a TN before.
Search verified TN-sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter System Safety Engineer roles by TN visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate to find employers already set up to file. This eliminates the time you'd otherwise spend educating HR about the TN process from scratch.
Request a support letter that specifies safety engineering duties
Your employer's support letter must describe your role in engineering terms, not just job-title language. CBP officers look for explicit references to hazard analysis, FMEA, or MIL-STD-882 compliance to confirm specialty occupation scope.
Understand the cap difference before accepting an offer
Canadian citizens have no TN cap and can enter at the border same-day. Mexican citizens fall under an annual allocation and need a consular appointment, which adds weeks to your start timeline. Factor that into your offer negotiation.
Prepare for CBP questions about project scope at entry
Officers regularly ask Canadian applicants to explain what safety engineering means for their specific role. Bring project summaries or a brief technical description of your duties alongside your degree and support letter.

Find System Safety Engineer JobsSystem Safety Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does System Safety Engineer qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. System Safety Engineers qualify under the USMCA 'Engineer' category, which requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in engineering or a closely related discipline. Your job duties must involve engineering analysis, such as hazard identification, fault tree analysis, or safety case development, not purely administrative or managerial functions.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for this role?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as CBP approves your entry. H-1B requires surviving a lottery with roughly a one-in-four chance before any filing begins. For System Safety Engineers with a qualifying engineering degree, TN is generally faster and more predictable. Mexican citizens face a TN cap but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN filing?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of your duties in engineering terms, the professional capacity in which you'll work, the anticipated length of employment, and your credentials. For System Safety Engineers, the letter should reference specific methodologies like FMEA, MIL-STD-882, or functional hazard assessment to clearly establish specialty occupation.
Where can I find System Safety Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters roles by sponsorship availability. Searching there connects you directly to employers who already understand the TN process, which removes the common obstacle of spending weeks educating HR about a visa category they've never encountered before.
Can a Mexican citizen apply for TN status for a System Safety Engineer role at the border like a Canadian?
No. Mexican TN applicants must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and attend an in-person interview before traveling to the U.S. to work. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a land border or preclearance location with their support letter and credentials in hand. Both nationalities receive TN status in the same professional categories, but the process and timeline differ significantly.
