Frame your portfolio around systems, not visuals
TN adjudicators evaluate whether UX work qualifies under Computer Systems Analyst, not design broadly. Restructure your portfolio to emphasize user research, information architecture, and system-level interaction design to support the specialty occupation argument.
Verify your degree field maps to the role
CBP officers expect a direct connection between your degree and UX work. Degrees in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, or Computer Science align most cleanly. A Fine Arts degree requires stronger documentation showing your work is analytically, not artistically, focused.
Target employers with dedicated UX teams
Companies with in-house product or engineering organizations are more likely to write TN-supporting job descriptions tied to systems analysis. Agencies and studios often frame roles around creative output, which creates classification risk at the border.
Negotiate who prepares the support letter
Your employer's support letter is the backbone of a TN filing. Push for HR or legal to draft it with explicit language linking your UX tasks to analyzing and designing computer-based systems, not to branding or marketing deliverables.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers already filing TN petitions
Searching for sponsors manually is slow and unreliable. Migrate Mate filters UX roles by employer visa sponsorship experience, so you can prioritize companies that have demonstrated familiarity with work visa processes and are likely equipped to support your TN application.
Prepare for secondary inspection if entering at a land port
Canadian applicants entering by land rather than air face longer CBP review queues for TN classifications. Bring printed copies of your offer letter, degree transcripts, and a one-page role summary in case an officer unfamiliar with UX requests clarification.

Find User Experience Design JobsUser Experience Design TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does User Experience Design qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the classification depends on how the role is defined. UX Design qualifies under the TN Computer Systems Analyst category when the work centers on analyzing user behavior, designing interaction flows, and improving digital systems. Roles framed primarily around visual identity, branding, or print work are harder to qualify. Your offer letter and job duties need to reflect the systems-analysis framing that CBP expects.
How does TN compare to H-1B for UX Design professionals?
TN has no annual cap or lottery for Canadians, so you can apply any time you have a qualifying job offer, with approval often granted at the port of entry the same day. H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with a low selection rate and months of waiting. For Mexican nationals, TN has a separate annual allocation, but it still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. TN is also employer-specific, so changing jobs requires a new filing.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for a TN UX filing?
Your employer must provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead that describes your job duties in terms of systems analysis, confirms you hold a qualifying degree, and specifies that the position requires professional-level UX expertise. The letter should avoid design-studio language and instead reference activities like conducting usability research, architecting navigation systems, and specifying interaction requirements for engineering teams.
Where can I find UX Design jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most job listings don't specify TN sponsorship separately from general visa support, making it hard to filter effectively. Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals and surfaces UX roles at employers with recent visa filings, so you're not spending time on companies that only support H-1B or who haven't sponsored work visas before.
Can I switch UX employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer the way an H-1B portability rule allows. You need a new TN approval before starting work with the new company. Canadians can obtain this at a port of entry with a new offer letter and supporting documents. Mexican nationals must schedule a new consular appointment. Timing the transition carefully prevents any unauthorized work gap.
