Veterinary Technician Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a veterinary technician in Pennsylvania?
To work as a veterinary technician in Pennsylvania you must obtain certification through the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Medicine, which requires graduating from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination. Once you pass, you register with the board and renew your certification on a biennial basis. Many Pennsylvania community colleges and universities, including Penn Foster and Manor College, offer accredited programs that fulfill these requirements.
How much do veterinary technicians make in Pennsylvania?
Veterinary technicians in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $46,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $36,480 for the lowest 10% to over $60,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire veterinary technicians in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring veterinary technicians in Pennsylvania right now include BluePearl Pet Hospital, NVA, and VCA Animal Hospitals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of specialty referral hospitals and university-affiliated clinics means many openings come from larger multi-department practices rather than single-doctor offices.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most veterinary technician jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Levittown have the most veterinary technician openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of the density of specialty and emergency hospitals, the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital, and a large suburban pet-owning population, while Pittsburgh's anchor veterinary practices and the Lehigh Valley's growing residential base drive openings in those markets.
Are there remote veterinary technician jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. Veterinary technician work is almost entirely hands-on, requiring in-person patient care, so remote roles represent only a small fraction of available positions. About 0% of veterinary technician openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those are mostly limited to veterinary triage advice lines or telehealth support roles rather than clinical positions.
How can I get hired as a veterinary technician in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to apply for veterinary assistant or kennel technician roles at Pennsylvania practices while completing or just finishing an AVMA-accredited program, then transition into a technician role once you have your certification. Large emergency and specialty groups like BluePearl Pet Hospital locations in Pennsylvania regularly hire new graduates into supervised technician roles. Externships through accredited Pennsylvania programs also convert to job offers at a meaningful rate, so completing your clinical hours at a target employer is a direct way in.
Where can I find and apply to veterinary technician jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to veterinary technician jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings across companion animal practices, emergency hospitals, and specialty centers. Find roles that fit your experience level and location and apply directly through each listing.
