INTRODUCTION
We are looking for a hybrid Growth Designer & Video Editor (contract) to serve as the creative heartbeat of our performance & growth marketing machine. This is not a "brand maintenance" role; you will be responsible for building high-performing, direct-response assets that stop the scroll and drive conversion across distinct platforms incl. Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Reddit.
The Performance & Growth Marketing team at 23andMe is the engine that drives our customer acquisition across all digital touchpoints. We operate at a high velocity, managing a multi-million dollar annual budget to bring our DNA insights, from ancestry to health insights, to millions of new customers. We believe that behind every data point is a human being, and our creative should reflect that same blend of scientific rigor and human connection.
Who We Are
We are a group of individuals passionate about genetic discovery. The 23andMe Research Institute is a non-profit medical research organization that enables people everywhere to access their genetic information, learn about themselves, and participate in the world's largest crowdsourced research initiative. The Institute aims to be the world's most significant contributor to scientific advancement, uniting people with the common goal of improving health and deepening our understanding of DNA, the code of life.
What You’ll Do
-
End-to-End Asset Production: Design and edit high-volume static, motion, and video assets for Paid Media and owned & operated channels such as our e-commerce website, Email, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Amazon, TikTok, and Influencers, among others.
-
Performance Iteration: Analyze weekly performance data (CTR, video completion rates, CPA, and ROAS) to rapidly iterate on winning creative. You will take a "winning" YouTube ad and version it into 10 different hooks for TikTok or 5 static carousels for Instagram.
-
Platform-Native Storytelling: Develop content that feels native to each environment, from lo-fi, high-trust UGC-style edits for TikTok to high-authority, polished motion graphics for YouTube and LinkedIn.
-
Creative Testing & Iteration: Collaborate on the annual demand gen roadmap by developing bold visual hypotheses. You will be responsible for creating a library of high-impact scroll-stoppers, art directions, and asset hierarchies designed to find our next performance "control" through rigorous A/B testing.
-
Testing Library Velocity: You will be measured on your ability to deliver a minimum of 20–30 creative variants per month to feed a high-velocity experimentation roadmap.
-
AI-Driven Efficiency: Leverage AI design and video tools to scale asset production and localization without sacrificing quality.
-
Conversion UI/UX: Design high-converting landing page layouts and web assets that align with our paid traffic funnels to ensure a seamless click-to-purchase journey.
What You’ll Bring
-
Direct Response Expertise: 4+ years of experience designing for performance marketing teams or agencies. You understand that "good design" is design that converts.
-
Full-Stack Creative Suite: Mastery of Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator). Proficiency in mobile-first editing tools (like CapCut) is a major plus for social-native content.
-
Video First Mindset: Strong motion graphics and video editing skills. You can take raw influencer footage and turn it into a high-energy, narrative-driven ad in hours, not days.
-
Data Literacy: You aren't afraid of a Meta or TikTok dashboard. You can look at performance metrics and translate them into creative solutions.
-
Speed & Scale: Experience managing creative volume for high velocity accounts spending $250k+ per month. You thrive in a high-cadence environment where we prioritize "speed to signal."
-
Strategic Autonomy: You are a self-starter who can take a brief and run with it, providing multiple creative directions and variations with minimal hand-holding.
-
Disciplined Creativity: Experience working within highly regulated industries (FinTech, Health, Biotech).
-
Portfolio: A link to your portfolio or reel is required, specifically highlighting "Performance Creative" or ads that drove measurable business results.

Video Editor Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a video editor in California?
Video editing in California requires no state-issued license or certification, so the path focuses on education and portfolio building. Most employers prefer candidates with a degree or certificate in film production, digital media, or a related field from a California institution such as UCLA, USC, or a California Community College. Building a strong demo reel and gaining hands-on experience through internships at production companies or studios is the most direct route to landing your first role.
How much do video editors make in California?
Video editors in California earn a median of about $88,490 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $42,020 for the lowest 10% to over $169,810 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire video editors in California?
Employers hiring video editors in California right now include Netflix, Owner, and 23andMe, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of entertainment studios, streaming platforms, and advertising agencies means steady demand from both large production houses and independent creative shops.
Which California cities have the most video editor jobs?
San Francisco, Burbank, and Los Angeles have the most video editor openings in California. Los Angeles dominates because of its dense concentration of film studios, streaming companies, and advertising agencies, while San Francisco draws demand from tech firms and digital content teams, and San Diego's growing media and gaming sectors contribute a meaningful share of listings.
Are there remote video editor jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of video editor openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well post-production work translates to distributed teams. Roles focused on digital content, social media editing, and branded video tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while on-set or live-production positions typically require an in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a video editor in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an assistant editor or post-production coordinator role, which large California studios and streaming companies use to train emerging talent. Productions connected to major Los Angeles studio lots and advertising agencies frequently bring on junior editors for social or digital content work. A concise demo reel showing personal projects, student films, or freelance cuts is the credential that moves a candidate forward when a degree or formal experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to video editor jobs in California?
You can find and apply to video editor jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across entertainment, advertising, streaming, and digital media. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to each one.
