Which companies sponsor visas for attorneys in Delaware?
Large corporate law firms headquartered in Wilmington are the most consistent sponsors, including Richards, Layton and Finger, Potter Anderson and Corroon, and Young Conaway Stargatt and Taylor. In-house legal departments at major financial institutions and corporations incorporated in Delaware, such as DuPont and Incyte, also sponsor attorneys, particularly for roles requiring specialized regulatory or transactional expertise.
Which visa types are most common for attorney roles in Delaware?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for attorney positions in Delaware, as law typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a Juris Doctor degree. O-1A visas are an option for attorneys who have gained national or international recognition in their field. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican citizens whose legal qualifications meet the category's requirements under the USMCA agreement.
Which cities in Delaware have the most attorney sponsorship jobs?
Wilmington accounts for the overwhelming majority of attorney visa sponsorship jobs in Delaware. It hosts the state's largest law firms, the Delaware Court of Chancery, and the registered offices of a significant share of Fortune 500 companies. Dover, the state capital, has a smaller but present legal market tied to state government and regulatory agencies. Newark sees limited attorney hiring outside of University of Delaware-affiliated roles.
How to find attorney visa sponsorship jobs in Delaware?
Migrate Mate filters attorney jobs specifically by visa sponsorship willingness, making it easier to identify Delaware employers actively hiring international candidates rather than sorting through listings that don't address sponsorship at all. Because Delaware's legal market is concentrated in corporate and transactional law, filtering by practice area on Migrate Mate helps international attorneys target firms where their specialty, whether M&A, IP, or compliance, aligns with demonstrated sponsorship history.
Are there state-specific considerations for attorney visa sponsorship in Delaware?
Delaware requires attorneys to be admitted to the Delaware Bar, which involves passing the Delaware Bar Exam regardless of where you were previously licensed. International attorneys who passed a foreign bar exam must have their credentials evaluated for eligibility to sit for the exam. Delaware's Court of Chancery specialization means firms frequently seek attorneys with corporate governance or securities backgrounds, which can strengthen a sponsorship case by demonstrating niche expertise that is genuinely hard to fill domestically.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored attorney jobs in Delaware?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
