Which companies sponsor visas for engineering interns in Florida?
Aerospace and defense contractors are among the most active sponsors, including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman near Orlando and Melbourne. Siemens and Honeywell maintain engineering operations in the state as well. Technology companies in Miami and Tampa also sponsor international interns, though sponsorship is never guaranteed and varies by program cycle and headcount.
Which visa types are most common for engineering intern roles in Florida?
Most international engineering interns in Florida work under F-1 OPT or CPT authorization, which allows students enrolled at U.S. universities to intern without a separate employer petition. J-1 visa intern visas through sponsor organizations are also common. Full H-1B visa sponsorship is rare at the intern stage because it requires employer petition filing and is subject to the annual cap and lottery.
Which cities in Florida have the most engineering intern sponsorship jobs?
Orlando and the Space Coast region around Melbourne and Titusville lead in aerospace and defense engineering internships, driven by proximity to Kennedy Space Center and major contractor campuses. Tampa has a growing presence in defense electronics and systems engineering. Miami attracts interns in civil, environmental, and software-adjacent engineering roles tied to its infrastructure growth and tech expansion.
How to find engineering intern visa sponsorship jobs in Florida?
Migrate Mate filters engineering intern job listings in Florida specifically by visa sponsorship availability, which saves time compared to screening postings manually. Search by city or region to surface roles near Orlando's aerospace corridor or Miami's tech hub. Listings are updated regularly, so checking Migrate Mate frequently during recruiting cycles from September through February gives the best chance of catching open intern positions.
Are there state-specific considerations for engineering interns seeking visa sponsorship in Florida?
Florida's concentration of federal contractors in aerospace and defense means many engineering intern roles require eligibility for U.S. security clearances, which can limit options for international students. Universities like University of Florida and Florida Tech have established pipelines with regional employers. Florida has no state income tax, which affects take-home pay but does not change federal visa sponsorship requirements for interns.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored engineering intern jobs in Florida?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
