Which companies sponsor visas for engineering interns in New York?
Large technology and financial services firms are the most active sponsors for engineering interns in New York. Companies including Google, Meta, Amazon, IBM, Salesforce, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase have consistent engineering internship programs in New York City. Semiconductor and defense firms like Lockheed Martin and L3Harris operate upstate and also participate in sponsored intern hiring.
Which visa types are most common for engineering intern roles in New York?
Most international engineering interns in New York work under F-1 OPT or CPT, which allows students enrolled at U.S. universities to work for a sponsoring employer without a separate visa petition. Some employers also sponsor J-1 intern or trainee visas for shorter placements. H-1B sponsorship is rare at the internship stage but occasionally occurs when a student transitions to full-time employment after graduation.
Which cities in New York have the most engineering intern sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the overwhelming majority of engineering intern sponsorship opportunities in the state, particularly in Manhattan and Brooklyn, where tech, finance, and media companies cluster. Albany has a growing semiconductor presence following major public investment in chip manufacturing facilities. Buffalo has an emerging clean energy and advanced manufacturing sector that occasionally supports sponsored engineering intern roles.
How to find engineering intern visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate lists engineering intern roles in New York that are open to visa sponsorship, filterable by location and role type, so you can focus on positions where employers are already willing to support international candidates. Because internship sponsorship is less common than full-time sponsorship, filtering specifically for New York and engineering intern roles on Migrate Mate saves significant time compared to reviewing general job postings.
Are there state-specific considerations for engineering intern visa sponsorship in New York?
New York's concentration of finance and technology employers means engineering interns often work in highly regulated environments where background checks and security clearances can affect eligibility for international candidates. New York City also has strong ties to top engineering programs at Columbia, Cornell Tech, and NYU Tandon, which feed directly into sponsored intern pipelines at local firms. Starting your search early, typically six to nine months before your intended start date, is standard practice for competitive New York internship programs.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored engineering intern jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
