Tips for Finding J-1 Sponsorship Jobs in Florida
Target Florida's resort and hospitality corridor
Orlando, Miami Beach, and the Florida Keys have some of the highest concentrations of J-1 intern and trainee sponsors in the country. Large hotel groups and resort operators file repeatedly each season, making them reliable sponsorship sources.
Understand Florida's two distinct J-1 markets
South Florida skews toward international business, finance, and hospitality roles with a Latin American focus, while Central and North Florida lean toward theme parks, agriculture, and research institutions. Targeting the right region for your field improves your odds significantly.
Search by J-1 category, not just job title
Florida employers sponsor across multiple J-1 categories including Intern, Trainee, Research Scholar, and Summer Work Travel. Filtering by category when browsing on Migrate Mate helps you find roles where your specific exchange program type is already approved.
Connect with Florida's university research programs
The University of Florida, University of Miami, and Florida State University all host J-1 Research Scholar and Professor exchange visitors. Academic and research roles at these institutions go through the university's designated sponsor office, which simplifies the DS-2019 process.
Apply early for seasonal hospitality positions
Florida's peak tourism seasons drive a surge in J-1 intern and trainee openings, particularly from September through March. Employers in Orlando and Miami typically begin recruiting three to six months ahead, so early applications give you a real advantage.
Verify the employer's sponsor status before applying
Not every Florida employer who wants to hire a J-1 exchange visitor is already working with a designated sponsor organization. Confirming this upfront saves weeks of back-and-forth. Listings on Migrate Mate are filtered to show roles where sponsorship has already been confirmed.

Which industries in Florida sponsor the most J-1 visas?
Hospitality and tourism lead by a significant margin, driven by Orlando's theme parks and resort complexes, Miami's hotel industry, and the Florida Keys' recreation sector. Healthcare, higher education, and research institutions also sponsor substantial numbers of J-1 visa exchange visitors, particularly under the Research Scholar and Intern categories. Agriculture and marine sciences round out the most active sponsoring industries in the state.
Which cities in Florida have the most J-1 sponsorship jobs?
Orlando has the highest concentration of J-1 openings due to its theme park and resort economy. Miami follows closely, particularly for business, hospitality, and international trade roles. Tampa and Jacksonville have growing employer bases across healthcare, finance, and education. Gainesville and Tallahassee are worth targeting if you're pursuing research or academic exchange positions tied to Florida's major public universities.
What types of roles typically qualify for J-1 sponsorship in Florida?
Roles must align with a recognized J-1 exchange category. In Florida, the most common qualifying positions include hotel and resort management training roles, research and laboratory positions at universities or medical centers, marketing and business development internships with international employers, and clinical training programs at teaching hospitals. The role must offer structured training or educational exchange value, not simply fill a staffing need.
How do I find J-1 sponsorship jobs in Florida?
Migrate Mate lists Florida J-1 jobs filtered by visa type and industry, so you can search specifically for employers already set up to sponsor exchange visitors rather than cold-applying and hoping. Alongside that, reaching out directly to Florida-based designated sponsor organizations and checking university international offices in Gainesville, Miami, and Tampa can surface openings that aren't broadly advertised.
Are there any Florida-specific considerations for J-1 sponsorship?
Florida has no state income tax, which affects how you plan your finances during an exchange program. For hospitality and tourism roles, be aware that Florida's peak and off-peak seasons heavily influence when positions open and close, and some sponsors only hire for fixed seasonal windows. If you're in a healthcare or research role, Florida's licensing requirements for certain clinical positions can affect whether your J-1 training plan is approvable, so confirm this with your sponsor organization early.
