POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE
DEPARTMENT OF CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MEDICINE
Florida International University (FIU)/Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) is a national leader in integrating community-based medical education and clinical care. It is dedicated to training socially accountable physicians, scientists, and health professionals committed to serving the community. HWCOM is also an academic and clinical affiliate of Baptist Health-South Florida and Nicklaus Children's Hospitals.
The Rowan Laboratory within the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at FIU/HWCOM is currently seeking a full-time, non-tenure Postdoctoral Associate position.
The lab studies why specific neurons and circuits fail in neurological disease. Our main focus is inhibitory interneurons, whose outsized control of circuit excitability make them an early point of failure and an attractive therapeutic target. Current directions include:
- Mechanisms that confer cellular and synaptic vulnerability/resilience in aging and neurodegeneration.
- Linking synapse- and circuit-level changes in the brain to blood-based biomarkers.
- New cell-type-targeted strategies including enhancer-AAV gene therapeutics.
The lab is funded by NIH (NIA, NINDS, NIMH) and collaborates within and across institutions. Dr. Rowan directs HWCOM's Advanced Neurotechnology Innovation Initiative, with access to new state-of-the-art imaging and omics infrastructure.
Who we are looking for
Scientists who think in big concepts but are equally driven to find out how things work at the molecular/physiological level. Electrophysiology, omics, or cellular neuroscience background preferred; with interest in moving between scales.
Responsibilities
- Lead independent projects within the lab's research themes, from design through publication.
- Contribute to grant proposals and apply for independent fellowships.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate trainees.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience, cell/molecular biology, bioengineering, or a related field.
- First-author publication record demonstrating independent research.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with one or more of: patch-clamp electrophysiology; proteomics or single-cell/spatial omics; two-photon imaging; AAV vector delivery; computational analysis of large datasets; or equivalent.
- Clear written and oral communication; a collaborative approach.
