INTRODUCTION
We are building the foundation for next-generation decentralized grid operations—distributing intelligence to the resilient edge to enable autonomous, self-healing, and adaptive grid management.
As a Senior Software Engineer & Scientist (Virtual Sensing), you will develop edge-native software, advanced virtual sensing algorithms, and intelligent control systems that bridge physics, AI, and distributed computing. This is a high-impact, hands-on role in a startup-style, fast-moving environment within GE Vernova’s CTO organization. You will report directly to the Electrification Chief Architect and collaborate across simulation, real-time edge deployments, and field validation to transform how the grid senses and responds.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Edge Engineering & Data Pipelines
- Build and deploy edge-native software components for decentralized operation, sensing, and control.
- Develop federated data pipelines that allow distributed nodes to collaborate securely without central coordination.
- Integrate field data sources (SCADA, PMUs, DER controllers) and industrial IoT protocols (LoRa, MQTT, DNP3, Modbus).
Virtual Sensing & Control
- Develop and deploy robust virtual sensing algorithms to infer critical power grid parameters (e.g., voltage stability, phase angles, line temperature, asset health) from limited edge sensor data.
- Deploy adaptive edge intelligence and control logic to enable real-time grid insights with minimal latency.
- Apply control theory and signal processing techniques (e.g., Kalman filters, state estimation) to refine virtual sensor accuracy.
Simulation & Integration
- Collaborate with power systems engineers to validate virtual sensor performance against physical models and real-world field data.
- Bridge the gap between simulation environments and live grid operations to "close the loop."
- Integrate AI/ML capabilities, federated control frameworks, and digital twins into next-generation grid platforms.
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Required Skills
- Software Engineering: Proficiency in Python, Go, or Rust (backend/edge) and TypeScript/React or Angular (UI).
- Edge/Cloud Infrastructure: Deep experience with Kubernetes/K3s, Kafka/NATS, MQTT, gRPC, and Pulsar.
- Data & Observability: Hands-on experience with InfluxDB/TimescaleDB and observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana).
- Domain Expertise: Proven experience with federated architectures, resilient edge software, and Transmission & Distribution (T&D) applications.
- Scientific Aptitude: Strong understanding of signal processing, control theory, and state estimation methods.
- AI/ML: Experience developing and deploying AI/ML models in production environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5+ years of experience.
- Simulation Tools: Familiarity with EMT platforms (PSCAD, RTDS, Opal-RT).
- Digital Twins: Experience with OpenFMB, Modelica, or graph-based modeling.
- Grid Standards: Knowledge of IEEE 2030.5, IEC 61850, or similar utility protocols.
WHY JOIN US
- Mission: Work at the forefront of the energy transition, solving the most critical challenges of the modern grid.
- Impact: Influence the architecture of decentralized, autonomous energy systems.
- Environment: Enjoy a startup-style, agile culture backed by the global reach and resources of GE Vernova.

Which companies in Florida sponsor visas for senior data science engineers?
Florida employers with documented H-1B sponsorship histories in data science include Chewy (Plantation), Citi (Tampa), Lockheed Martin (Orlando), and various health systems such as AdventHealth and HCA Healthcare. Miami-based fintech firms and e-commerce companies have also filed LCAs for senior data science roles. Sponsorship activity is concentrated at larger enterprises and tech-forward companies rather than small startups.
What visa types are most common for senior data science engineer roles in Florida?
The H-1B is the most common work visa for senior data science engineers in Florida, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, statistics, or mathematics. Some candidates with extraordinary achievements pursue O-1A classification. Employers with intracompany transfer needs may also use the L-1B for specialized knowledge workers.
How to find senior data science engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Florida?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse senior data science engineer openings in Florida without sorting through roles that won't support international candidates. You can filter by state and seniority level to surface relevant openings in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville. Migrate Mate's listings are targeted toward roles where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor.
Which Florida cities have the most senior data science engineer sponsorship jobs?
Miami leads due to its concentration of fintech, health-tech, and international business headquarters. Tampa has grown significantly as a regional analytics hub, with firms in insurance, finance, and cybersecurity hiring senior data science talent. Orlando attracts data science roles tied to simulation, defense, and hospitality technology. Jacksonville, while smaller, has financial services employers that periodically sponsor senior-level data science engineers.
Are there any Florida-specific considerations for senior data science engineers pursuing visa sponsorship?
Florida has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage comparisons that DOL uses to set LCA wage floors. The state's university pipeline, including the University of Florida and Florida International University, produces domestic competition at the senior level, meaning employers tend to sponsor when candidates bring specialized skills in areas like NLP, deep learning, or large-scale distributed systems. Florida's defense and aerospace corridors also require security clearance eligibility for some roles, which can limit sponsorship options.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior data science engineer jobs in Florida?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
