Which companies sponsor visas for construction project managers in Illinois?
Large general contractors with established Illinois operations are the most consistent sponsors. Turner Construction, Skanska USA, Pepper Construction, Power Construction, and Gilbane Building Company have all filed H-1B petitions for project management roles in the Chicago metro. These firms have dedicated HR and legal infrastructure to handle the sponsorship process, making them more likely to support international hires than smaller regional contractors.
Which visa types are most common for construction project manager roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for construction project managers in Illinois, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation when supported by a degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. The O-1A is an option for candidates with documented exceptional achievements. TN status applies to qualified Canadian and Mexican nationals whose credentials align with the engineering professional category under USMCA.
Which cities in Illinois have the most construction project manager sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of sponsored construction project manager positions in Illinois, driven by large-scale transit expansions, high-rise residential development, and hospital and university construction. The broader metro area, including Schaumburg, Naperville, and Rosemont, also generates demand through commercial and infrastructure projects. Outside the metro, opportunities are more limited and sponsorship less common among smaller local contractors.
How to find construction project manager visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find construction project manager roles in Illinois where employers are open to visa sponsorship. You can filter specifically for Illinois-based positions and construction-related job titles, saving significant time compared to sorting through general postings. Beyond searching, it helps to target general contractors with active DOL Labor Condition Application filings in Illinois, which signal established sponsorship experience in the construction sector.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for construction project managers seeking visa sponsorship?
Illinois requires employers filing H-1B petitions to pay the Department of Labor prevailing wage for the specific job and location, which in Chicago is benchmarked against a high-cost metro area. This means sponsored salaries in Chicago are typically higher than in downstate Illinois. Candidates with Illinois licensure or progress toward a Professional Engineer credential can strengthen their specialty occupation case, particularly when the role involves overseeing licensed engineering work.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored construction project manager jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
