Which aerospace and defense companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Illinois?
Boeing has one of its largest engineering and corporate presences in the Chicago area and has historically filed OPT-compatible positions across engineering and technical disciplines. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, and Raytheon Technologies also maintain Illinois operations and have sponsored F-1 OPT workers in technical roles. Smaller defense contractors and aerospace suppliers in the greater Chicago and Rockford corridors also participate in OPT hiring, particularly for engineering and manufacturing support functions.
Which cities in Illinois have the most aerospace and defense F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, including Arlington Heights and Lisle, concentrate the most aerospace and defense OPT opportunities due to Boeing's corporate headquarters and the region's dense contractor ecosystem. Rockford has a notable aerospace manufacturing base with companies like Woodward and several Tier 1 suppliers. The Quad Cities area near Moline also supports defense-related manufacturing and engineering roles, making it a secondary market worth monitoring alongside the Chicago metro.
What types of aerospace and defense roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles that directly apply a degree field tend to qualify most consistently under OPT authorization. In aerospace and defense, that includes aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering, avionics, software development for embedded or flight systems, and structural analysis. Roles in supply chain, quality assurance with an engineering component, and data analytics applied to defense systems have also appeared in OPT-eligible positions. The role must fall within a field directly related to your degree program.
How do I find aerospace and defense F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT job seekers and filters aerospace and defense positions in Illinois by sponsorship availability, so you are not sorting through postings that will not support your visa status. Search by the Aerospace and Defense category with Illinois as your location to surface active roles from employers who have sponsored OPT workers before. Setting up alerts on Migrate Mate for new Illinois aerospace postings helps you apply early, which matters in a sector where security clearance timelines can affect hiring speed.
Are there state-specific or industry-specific considerations for F-1 OPT in Illinois aerospace and defense roles?
Security clearance eligibility is a significant factor in Illinois aerospace and defense hiring. Many roles at defense-focused employers require or prefer a U.S. security clearance, which F-1 OPT holders are generally not eligible to obtain, limiting access to certain positions. However, unclassified engineering and commercial aerospace roles do not carry this restriction. Illinois has no state-level visa sponsorship requirements beyond federal regulations, but OPT STEM extension eligibility depends on your degree and the role qualifying under an approved STEM CIP code, which is worth confirming with your designated school official.
