Which companies sponsor visas for field engineers in Illinois?
Several large Illinois-based employers have established H-1B sponsorship histories for field engineering roles, including Motorola Solutions, Abbott Laboratories, Baxter International, and Caterpillar. Telecommunications infrastructure companies operating in the Chicago metro, along with industrial automation firms in the collar counties, also appear frequently in Department of Labor LCA filings for field engineer positions.
Which visa types are most common for field engineer roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for field engineers in Illinois, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field such as electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. Some employers also use L-1B visas for internal transfers into field engineering positions.
Which cities in Illinois have the most field engineer sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and the surrounding metro area, including Schaumburg, Lisle, Deerfield, and Libertyville, account for the majority of field engineer sponsorship opportunities in Illinois. Schaumburg in particular hosts Motorola Solutions and numerous telecommunications contractors. Downstate, Peoria has a smaller but active market tied to Caterpillar's manufacturing and service operations, which occasionally generate field engineering openings.
How to find field engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse field engineer roles in Illinois without sorting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. Searching by the field engineer title and filtering to Illinois on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have indicated sponsorship willingness, saving significant time compared to reviewing unfiltered postings across general job boards.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for field engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Illinois employers sponsoring H-1B field engineers must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan statistical area, which tend to reflect a high-cost market. Field engineer roles that involve significant travel within Illinois or to client sites may raise questions about the work location listed on the Labor Condition Application, so employers typically need to account for worksites in their filings.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored field engineer jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
