Which companies sponsor visas for medical doctors in Illinois?
Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, University of Chicago Medicine, Advocate Health Care, and NorthShore University HealthSystem are among the most active sponsors in Illinois. Large federally qualified health centers and academic teaching hospitals tend to sponsor most consistently, as they have dedicated immigration support staff and established relationships with immigration counsel for physician recruitment.
Which visa types are most common for medical doctor roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for physicians in Illinois, covering specialty occupation roles that require a medical degree. The J-1 Conrad 30 Waiver is widely used for international medical graduates completing residency or fellowship, allowing them to waive the two-year home residency requirement by committing to work in a medically underserved area. The O-1A is an option for physicians with distinguished records of achievement.
Which cities in Illinois have the most medical doctor sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the majority of physician sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, concentrated in its major hospital systems and academic medical centers. Peoria sees demand through OSF HealthCare and UnityPoint Health. Springfield and Rockford have ongoing recruitment needs, particularly in primary care, family medicine, and psychiatry, where physician shortages make international recruitment more common.
How to find medical doctor visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles offering visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify Illinois-based medical doctor positions without sorting through listings that don't support international candidates. You can filter by state and role to surface openings at hospital systems and health centers actively recruiting sponsored physicians. This is especially useful for narrowing down roles that align with J-1 waiver or H-1B eligibility requirements.
Are there state-specific considerations for medical doctors seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois participates in the Conrad 30 Waiver program, which allocates 30 J-1 waiver slots annually for physicians agreeing to practice in Health Professional Shortage Areas or Medically Underserved Areas. Competition for these slots is significant, and applications are processed through the Illinois Department of Public Health. Physicians should also factor in Illinois medical licensure requirements, which run concurrently with visa processing and can affect start date timelines.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored medical doctor jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
