Which companies sponsor visas for project architects in Illinois?
Chicago-based firms with established international hiring track records include Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Gensler, HOK, Perkins&Will, and Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Larger healthcare and corporate real estate developers operating in Illinois also sponsor project architects. Firms with dedicated HR infrastructure and active federal contracts tend to have more consistent sponsorship programs than smaller boutique studios.
Which visa types are most common for project architect roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for project architects in Illinois, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a professional architecture degree. The O-1A is an option for architects with demonstrated exceptional recognition, such as major design awards or published work. Candidates from Canada or Mexico may also qualify under the TN visa category, which lists architects explicitly as an eligible profession.
Which cities in Illinois have the most project architect sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the large majority of project architect sponsorship activity in Illinois, driven by its concentration of national and global architecture firms, ongoing mixed-use development, and major institutional clients. Evanston sees some activity tied to Northwestern University facilities work. Outside the Chicago metro, sponsorship opportunities are limited, as most mid-size Illinois firms do not have established visa sponsorship infrastructure.
How to find project architect visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you can browse project architect roles posted by Illinois employers who are actively open to sponsoring. This saves significant time compared to researching firm-by-firm. Filtering by Chicago or Illinois on Migrate Mate surfaces positions at architecture firms, developers, and institutions that have sponsored international hires in the past or indicate sponsorship availability in their postings.
Are there state-specific considerations for project architects seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois requires architects to hold an NCARB-recognized license to stamp construction documents, so international candidates should factor in IDP completion and ARE exam timelines alongside visa processing. The Department of Labor's prevailing wage determination for project architects in the Chicago metro area is among the higher benchmarks nationally, which affects the wage floor employers must meet when filing an H-1B Labor Condition Application. Candidates with NCARB certification or reciprocal licensure from their home country may move through the credentialing process more efficiently.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored project architect jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
