Which companies sponsor visas for physical therapists in Illinois?
Large health systems with established immigration programs are the most consistent sponsors in Illinois. Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, Advocate Health Care, and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab have all sponsored physical therapists through employment-based visa categories. Long-term acute care hospitals and outpatient rehabilitation networks, particularly those with high patient volumes in the Chicago suburbs, also regularly hire internationally trained PTs.
Which visa types are most common for PT roles in Illinois?
Most international physical therapists in Illinois enter on H-1B visas, which require employer sponsorship and are subject to the annual cap and lottery. The EB-3 immigrant visa is a common longer-term pathway, as physical therapy qualifies as a skilled occupation under that category. Some employers also use the TN visa for Canadian and Mexican PTs who meet the USMCA professional list requirements.
Which cities in Illinois have the most PT sponsorship jobs?
Chicago and its surrounding suburbs account for the overwhelming majority of PT sponsorship opportunities in Illinois. The northern suburbs, including Evanston, Skokie, and Naperville, have significant outpatient and hospital-based openings. Rockford, Peoria, and Springfield each have regional health systems with PT needs, though these markets are smaller and sponsorship is less frequent outside major academic medical centers.
How to find pt visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters PT roles in Illinois by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're not sorting through postings from employers who won't sponsor. Search physical therapist roles filtered to Illinois on Migrate Mate to find health systems and rehabilitation clinics actively hiring sponsored candidates. Creating a profile also helps match you to new postings as they appear.
Are there state-specific considerations for internationally trained PTs seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois requires physical therapists to hold a state license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation before practicing, and most employers will condition any visa sponsorship offer on obtaining licensure. International graduates must also pass the NPTE and meet FCCPT or equivalent credential evaluation requirements. Chicago's academic medical centers often have dedicated HR teams experienced with H-1B and EB-3 filings for therapy roles, making them more predictable sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored pt jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
