Which technology companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in Iowa?
Iowa technology employers with documented STEM OPT and subsequent H-1B visa filing history include Principal Financial Group, Collins Aerospace, Plex Systems, and regional data center operators. Larger Iowa-based insurers and financial services firms frequently hire software engineers and data scientists through STEM OPT. Reviewing DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data is a practical way to identify which specific Iowa employers have recent sponsorship activity.
Which cities in Iowa have the most technology F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines accounts for the largest share of Iowa technology sponsorship opportunities, particularly in fintech, insurance software, and enterprise IT. Cedar Rapids supports technology roles tied to aerospace, agribusiness software, and manufacturing systems. Ames benefits from proximity to Iowa State University, generating demand for research-adjacent software and data roles. Iowa City and Davenport also have smaller but active technology hiring markets for STEM OPT candidates.
What types of technology roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
Roles that consistently qualify include software engineer, data analyst, machine learning engineer, systems analyst, cybersecurity analyst, cloud infrastructure engineer, and embedded systems developer. The position must appear on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program List through the employer's E-Verify enrollment and an approved I-983 training plan filed with your Designated School Official. Roles requiring a directly related STEM degree field generally meet the qualifying criteria under USCIS guidelines.

Are there state-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT in Iowa's technology sector?
Iowa does not impose additional state-level visa requirements beyond federal USCIS and DOL standards. However, Iowa's technology sector skews toward established enterprises in financial services, aerospace, and agribusiness rather than venture-backed startups, so most sponsoring employers tend to have formal HR processes and prior LCA filing experience. STEM OPT candidates should confirm that their employer is enrolled in E-Verify before submitting the I-983 training plan, as E-Verify participation is a federal eligibility requirement.
