INTRODUCTION
Leggett & Platt is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Azure & Microsoft Cloud to join our engineering team at the IDEA Center in Lenexa, Kansas. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a close-knit team in a global organization. In this role, you will design, build, and operate application services on the Microsoft Azure platform, balancing hands-on software development with cloud architecture, identity, and containerization responsibilities. We are looking for a highly collaborative engineer who writes high-quality code, understands the Azure ecosystem deeply, mentors others and communicates technical tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using C#/.NET and Python, deployed on Microsoft Azure.
- Architect cloud-native application components that integrate with Azure platform services such as Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure SQL Database, and Storage.
- Implement secure authentication and authorization using Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), including app registrations, RBAC, and managed identities.
- Design and consume RESTful APIs, applying secure integration patterns (OAuth2/OpenID Connect) across internal and external services.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps to automate build, test, and deployment across development, staging, and production environments.
- Contribute to containerization efforts, packaging services with Docker and supporting deployment to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) or Azure Container Apps.
- Partner with cloud/infrastructure engineering on networking, environment configuration, and deployment practices that keep application and platform concerns aligned.
- Instrument applications for observability using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights, and lead troubleshooting of production issues.
- Participate in architecture and design discussions, weighing scalability, security, cost, and maintainability tradeoffs.
- Conduct code reviews and mentor other engineers, sharing patterns and practices that raise the team's overall engineering quality.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, QA, and business stakeholders, translating technical decisions into terms non-technical partners can act on.
- Evaluate and help integrate AI-assisted development and Azure AI tooling to improve delivery speed and code quality.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, including meaningful hands-on experience building and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure.
- Strong proficiency in C# and/or Python for backend or service-oriented development.
- Solid understanding of core Azure services: App Service, Functions, Azure SQL Database, Storage, and messaging services such as Service Bus or Event Grid.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD): authentication/authorization flows, app registrations, RBAC, and managed identities.
- Experience designing and securing RESTful APIs, including OAuth2/OpenID Connect-based authentication patterns.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, ideally Azure DevOps, including multi-stage builds and release approvals.
- Familiarity with containerization concepts (Docker) and exposure to orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes or Azure Container Apps.
- Proficiency with Git-based version control and Agile/Scrum delivery practices.
- Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills spanning both application code and cloud infrastructure.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor other engineers and elevate engineering practices through code review and knowledge sharing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Production experience with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) or Azure Container Apps for containerized workload deployment.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Bicep, ARM templates, or Terraform).
- Familiarity with Azure API Management for securing and managing APIs at scale.
- Exposure to Azure AI services (Azure OpenAI, Azure Cognitive Services, Azure Machine Learning) or AI-assisted development workflows.
- Experience with GitOps deployment workflows (Flux or ArgoCD) for Kubernetes-based environments.
- Relevant Microsoft certifications such as AZ-104, AZ-204, AZ-400, or AZ-305.
- Knowledge of Azure security fundamentals beyond the basics: Key Vault, Defender for Cloud, Azure Policy.
- Experience with test automation and TDD/BDD practices.
- Background in performance tuning or cost optimization (FinOps) for cloud-hosted applications.
- Prior experience acting as a technical point of contact or informal team lead on a project, without formal management responsibility.
OUR VALUES
Our values speak to our shared beliefs and describe how we approach working together.
- Putting People First reflects our commitment to safety and care of each other, learning and development, and creating an inclusive environment of mutual respect, empathy and belonging.
- Do the Right Thing focuses us on acting with honesty and integrity, delivering the results the right way, taking pride in our work, and speaking the truth – good or bad.

Which companies sponsor visas for senior software development engineers in Kansas?
Garmin International in Olathe is one of the most active H-1B sponsors for senior software engineers in Kansas, filing petitions for roles in embedded systems and navigation software. Oracle Health (formerly Cerner) in Kansas City, T-Mobile's regional offices, and defense contractors like Spirit AeroSystems also have documented sponsorship histories for senior engineering positions. Larger employers with established HR infrastructure are generally better positioned to navigate the sponsorship process.
Which visa types are most common for senior software development engineer roles in Kansas?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for senior software development engineers in Kansas, as these roles consistently qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Candidates with extraordinary achievement may explore the O-1A. Canadians and Mexicans working in software may qualify for TN visa status. Employers with existing multinational operations sometimes use the L-1B for intracompany transfers of engineers with specialized knowledge.
Which cities in Kansas have the most senior software development engineer sponsorship jobs?
The Kansas City metro, particularly Overland Park and Lenexa on the Kansas side, accounts for the largest share of senior software development engineer sponsorship activity in the state. Olathe is significant due to Garmin's headquarters presence. Wichita sees sponsorship activity primarily through aerospace and defense technology firms. Lawrence, home to the University of Kansas, has a smaller but growing technology employer base that occasionally supports senior engineering roles.
How to find senior software development engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Kansas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship eligibility, making it straightforward to browse senior software development engineer openings in Kansas without sorting through postings from employers who don't sponsor. You can filter by location to focus on the Kansas City metro, Overland Park, or Wichita. Migrate Mate also surfaces employers with verified sponsorship histories, which is particularly useful for senior engineering roles where the hiring timeline and petition process require employer commitment upfront.
What should senior software development engineers know about visa sponsorship in Kansas specifically?
Kansas employers sponsoring H-1B petitions for senior software development engineers must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor certifying the offered wage meets prevailing wage levels for the role and location. Because Kansas City straddles the state line, some positions listed as 'Kansas City' may technically be in Missouri, which affects the LCA jurisdiction. Senior-level roles requiring management of technical teams or specialized system architecture expertise can sometimes support stronger specialty occupation arguments during petition review.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior software development engineer jobs in Kansas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
