Job Description:
About Packsize,
Packsize is redefining the way businesses and their customers use and experience packaging around the world. We build the technology, design the right solutions, and automate the processes that propel the industry forward. To us, packaging is much more than a box—it’s delivering what’s right for our customers, their customers, our people, and the planet.
The Role
Packsize is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join the R&D Hardware team in Louisville, KY. This role is focused on reducing the cost and complexity of Packsize machines through thoughtful engineering analysis, redesign, and system-level optimization.
You will work across mechanical and electrical subsystems to identify opportunities for BOM cost reduction, part simplification, part longevity and increased modularity, while preserving or improving machine performance, reliability, and serviceability.
By lowering material cost, reducing part count, improving reuse, and enabling scalable configurations (modularity), this role plays a direct part in lowering the barrier to entry for customers and improving Packsize’s competitive position.
What You’ll Do
- Lead BOM cost-reduction initiatives through redesign of major machine components and subsystems
- Analyze existing machine architectures for standardization, simplification, and reuse opportunities
- Drive modularity and platform thinking across mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
- Partner with Procurement, Service, Quality and Supply Chain to evaluate suppliers, quotations, and cost drivers
- Support redesign efforts focused on reduced part count and improved manufacturability
- Report out on cost savings goals
- Provide system-level design input during design and architecture reviews
- Document and implement design changes using ECOs in a PLM system
- Collaborate with sustaining and development engineers to balance cost, reliability, safety, and compliance
- Participate in testing and validation of redesigned components and assemblies
- Support transfer of redesigned systems into production
- Engage in continuous improvement activities with a lean mindset
What You’ll Bring
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
- Experience in industrial machine design or sustaining engineering
- Demonstrated experience with design-to-cost or value engineering initiatives
- Strong mechanical design background with working knowledge of automation systems
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Understanding of DFM, DFA, and design for serviceability principles
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, GD&T, and electrical schematics
- Experience with PDM/PLM tools and engineering change processes
- Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Nice to Have
- Exposure to electrical systems, sensors, PLCs, and general industrial controls
- Experience working directly with suppliers and contract manufacturers
- Background in modular product platforms or configurable machine systems
- Hands-on prototyping and machine build experience
A Few Other Things
Up to 15% travel as needed.

Search Manufacturing Jobs in KentuckyManufacturing STEM OPT Sponsorship Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
Which manufacturing companies in Kentucky sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas?
Several large manufacturers in Kentucky have histories of filing Labor Condition Applications for STEM-eligible roles. Toyota's Georgetown assembly plant, GE Appliances in Louisville, and Ford's Louisville Assembly and Kentucky Truck plants are among the operations that regularly hire engineering talent. Smaller Tier 1 automotive suppliers across the I-65 corridor also participate in STEM OPT hiring. You can verify a specific employer's filing history through the OFLC Wage Search tool.
Which cities in Kentucky have the most manufacturing F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Louisville leads in sheer employer volume, anchored by GE Appliances, Ford, and a dense network of logistics and industrial suppliers. Georgetown and Lexington benefit from Toyota's North American manufacturing hub and its supplier ecosystem. Bowling Green attracts automotive and advanced materials employers tied to the Corvette assembly plant and Western Kentucky University's manufacturing research programs. Elizabethtown and Shelbyville also host notable production facilities along the interstate manufacturing corridor.
How do I find manufacturing F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in Kentucky?
Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for manufacturing roles in Kentucky that are open to F-1 STEM OPT candidates, showing verified employer sponsorship history drawn from DOL Labor Condition Application data. This is more targeted than a general search because it surfaces only companies that have filed for STEM-eligible positions. Cross-reference results with your DSO to confirm your specific program and CIP code qualify under the STEM OPT extension before applying.
What types of manufacturing roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in Kentucky?
Roles that qualify must be directly related to a STEM-designated CIP code from your degree. In Kentucky's manufacturing sector, that commonly includes industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality assurance engineering, process engineering, and supply chain analytics. Production supervisory roles or general operations positions that do not require an engineering or applied science degree are typically ineligible. O*NET occupation profiles can help you confirm whether a specific role maps to a STEM classification.
Are there any state-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in Kentucky's manufacturing sector?
Kentucky does not add state-level visa requirements on top of federal STEM OPT rules, but employers in the state must be enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of sponsoring STEM OPT workers, and they must submit a formal training plan through your DSO. Kentucky's heavy concentration in automotive manufacturing means many open roles have shift-work or plant-floor components, which can affect how training plans are written. Confirm E-Verify enrollment and training plan readiness with any employer before accepting an offer.
