Which companies sponsor visas for interns in Maryland?
Johns Hopkins University and its affiliated health system, the National Institutes of Health, Leidos, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin are among the Maryland employers with established intern sponsorship programs. Biotech firms clustered around Rockville and Gaithersburg, including those in the I-270 corridor, also sponsor interns, particularly for research and life sciences roles requiring specialized academic backgrounds.
Which visa types are most common for intern roles in Maryland?
F-1 OPT and CPT are the most common work authorizations for interns in Maryland, allowing students enrolled at U.S. universities to work without requiring employer-filed petitions. J-1 intern and trainee visas are also widely used, especially for programs coordinated through authorized sponsors. H-1B sponsorship for intern-level roles is uncommon, as the category is designed for full-time specialty occupation positions rather than temporary internships.
How to find intern visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship status, making it straightforward to identify Maryland intern roles where employers are open to sponsoring international candidates. You can filter by location and role type to surface intern positions in Baltimore, Bethesda, Rockville, and the broader DC metro area. This saves significant time compared to manually screening postings that don't address sponsorship at all.
Which cities in Maryland have the most intern sponsorship jobs?
Bethesda and Rockville lead for biotech and federal health agency internships, given proximity to NIH and a dense cluster of life sciences companies along the I-270 corridor. Baltimore is strong for healthcare, cybersecurity, and university-affiliated research internships, anchored by Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Medical System. Annapolis and College Park also generate intern opportunities in government contracting and technology.
Are there state-specific considerations for intern visa sponsorship in Maryland?
Maryland's high concentration of federal contractors means many intern roles require security clearance eligibility, which can affect international candidates since most clearances require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Outside the federal contracting sector, the state's biotech and life sciences corridor actively recruits from university pipelines at University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, and Morgan State, making academic ties to Maryland institutions a practical advantage for sponsored intern candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored intern jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
