The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking interns for the Mediation Unit within our Consumer Protection Division. As an intern in this unit, your primary responsibility will be to mediate written consumer complaints filed with our office on a wide range of issues. You will be assigned your own caseload and will work closely with your supervisor to review documentation, analyze the facts, develop effective mediation strategies, and communicate with consumers, businesses, and other parties to help resolve these matters.
The Division also operates a public hotline that community members can call to discuss concerns, inquire about a business's complaint history, or seek guidance regarding their rights and potential remedies. Many of these conversations lead to written complaints, which are then assigned to interns for follow-up and mediation.
During your internship, you will work closely with the Unit's professional staff, as well as volunteers and fellow interns from undergraduate, graduate, and law programs across the region. Successful interns demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to work independently, a genuine interest in helping people, effective public-facing communication, and an enthusiasm for problem-solving.
What You Will Learn: During the internship, you will develop a greater understanding of the rights and responsibilities of consumers and businesses and learn about state, federal and local consumer laws on subjects such as advertising, deceptive trade practices, auto repairs and sales, contracts, housing, telemarketing, and warranties. You will learn about mediation as a method of resolving disputes and receive practical hands-on experience in using various mediation techniques to resolve consumer complaints.
You will also learn how to explain the law and give practical advice and consumer tips to help Marylanders resolve their current problems and avoid future complaints.
Time Commitment: A minimum of 10 hours per week for a 12 week period is required. You must complete your hours in our office during the normal business working day between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, typically on a two day schedule. We are willing to work with you to arrange times and days around your schedule.
Because students are given a great deal of responsibility, regular attendance and dependability are essential. You should consider carefully the selection of an internship and its inherent time commitment in relation to your class schedule.
Availability: This internship is available year-round. Students seeking academic credit should consult their career center, internship coordinator, or sponsoring professor for approval.
Experience: Undergraduate, graduate, and law students from various academic fields including public administration, sociology, pre-law, communications, political science and international relations have completed internships with this office. We will consider candidates for internships from these and other academic fields. The only prerequisites are your interest in learning about dispute resolution and consumer law, and your willingness to help people. Being bilingual in English/Spanish or other languages is a plus.
Transportation: The Consumer Protection Division is located in a convenient downtown Baltimore location, near the Light Rail and Metro, museums, shops, restaurants and other attractions. We also have volunteers working in our Prince Georges County office in Largo. Free parking is offered to volunteers at both locations.
