Which companies sponsor visas for product software engineers in Maryland?
Large federal contractors and technology firms are among the most active sponsors in Maryland. Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin regularly file H-1B petitions for software engineering roles. Beyond defense tech, companies like CareFirst, T. Rowe Price, and health-tech firms based in the Baltimore-Columbia corridor also sponsor product software engineers with consistent frequency.
Which visa types are most common for product software engineer roles in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for product software engineers in Maryland, given that the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. L-1B visas appear among multinational contractors transferring engineers to Maryland offices. Australians may also pursue the E-3, which has no lottery and processes year-round.
Which cities in Maryland have the most product software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Bethesda and Rockville in Montgomery County lead in sponsorship volume, driven by proximity to federal agencies and a dense concentration of government contractors. Columbia sits at the midpoint of the Baltimore-Washington corridor and hosts major tech and cybersecurity employers. Baltimore itself has a growing software engineering hiring base, anchored by health systems, fintech firms, and University of Maryland-affiliated startups.
How to find product software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to find product software engineer roles in Maryland without sifting through postings that don't sponsor. You can filter by state and role type to see current openings from Maryland employers who have an active history of sponsoring international engineers, including contractors, health-tech companies, and cybersecurity firms in the Baltimore-Washington corridor.
Are there state-specific considerations for product software engineers seeking sponsorship in Maryland?
Maryland's high concentration of federal contractors means many product software engineer roles require security clearances, which can complicate or delay sponsorship since clearances are generally not granted to non-U.S. persons. Uncleared commercial and health-tech roles remain fully accessible. The University of Maryland's strong computer science pipeline also means employers in the region are familiar with OPT and STEM OPT timelines when hiring international graduates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product software engineer jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
