Which companies sponsor visas for staff software engineers in Massachusetts?
Several large employers in Massachusetts have established sponsorship programs for staff software engineers, including Akamai Technologies, Wayfair, HubSpot, MathWorks, Raytheon Technologies, and Biogen. Boston's biotech corridor and Route 128 technology belt also include mid-size companies with active sponsorship histories. Sponsorship at the staff level is more common at larger organizations with dedicated immigration counsel, though high-growth startups occasionally sponsor as well.
Which visa types are most common for staff software engineer roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B is the most common visa for staff software engineers in Massachusetts, as the role clearly qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Employers also sponsor the O-1A for candidates with extraordinary ability. Transferees from multinational companies may use the L-1B or L-1A. Canadian and Mexican nationals sometimes enter on TN visas under the software engineer category.
How to find staff software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to search for staff software engineer roles in Massachusetts without manually screening hundreds of postings. The platform surfaces companies with active sponsorship programs, so you can focus on employers already prepared to support H-1B or other work visa petitions. Searching by both role level and state helps narrow results to positions where sponsorship is genuinely on the table.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most staff software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge account for the largest share of staff software engineer sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts, anchored by the Seaport tech district, Kendall Square's biotechnology and software companies, and Back Bay offices of multinational firms. Waltham and Burlington along the Route 128 corridor are secondary hubs with a strong presence of defense technology, networking, and enterprise software employers. Worcester has a smaller but growing technology sector.
Are there any Massachusetts-specific factors that affect staff software engineer visa sponsorship?
Massachusetts employers must pay H-1B workers the higher of the actual wage paid to comparable employees or the prevailing wage for the role and location, as determined by Department of Labor standards. Boston and Cambridge prevailing wage levels reflect the region's high cost of living, which means staff engineer roles typically need to meet correspondingly higher wage thresholds. The concentration of research universities like MIT and Boston University also creates a strong pipeline of candidates already holding OPT or STEM OPT work authorization.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored staff software engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
