Which companies sponsor visas for software design engineers in Minnesota?
The most active sponsors for software design engineers in Minnesota include Medtronic, UnitedHealth Group, Target, Best Buy, and 3M, all of which have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications for engineering roles in recent years. Mid-size software firms and medical technology companies in the Twin Cities metro also sponsor regularly, particularly for roles requiring specialized systems or embedded software design experience.
Which visa types are most common for software design engineer roles in Minnesota?
The H-1B is the most common visa for software design engineers in Minnesota, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Candidates already holding L-1B (intracompany transferee) status or those with an O-1A for extraordinary ability occasionally enter Minnesota's market through those pathways, depending on their background and employer.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most software design engineer sponsorship jobs?
Minneapolis and St. Paul account for the large majority of software design engineer sponsorship activity in Minnesota. Specific suburbs like Bloomington, Eden Prairie, and Minnetonka host major corporate campuses, including Medtronic's global headquarters and Best Buy's home office. Rochester is a secondary hub, driven by the presence of IBM and Mayo Clinic's technology operations, which regularly hire engineering talent.
How to find software design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically to roles where employers are open to visa sponsorship, so you can search software design engineer positions in Minnesota without sorting through companies that won't sponsor. The platform surfaces openings across the Twin Cities tech sector, medical device industry, and retail technology firms. Setting up a search for Minnesota on Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find relevant sponsorship-eligible roles.
Are there state-specific considerations for software design engineers pursuing sponsorship in Minnesota?
Minnesota's engineering job market is shaped by its strong medical technology sector, which means software design roles here often sit at the intersection of software and regulated hardware development. H-1B petitions for these roles must reflect prevailing wage levels set by the Department of Labor for the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. University of Minnesota graduates in computer science and electrical engineering represent an active local talent pipeline that employers draw from alongside international candidates.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software design engineer jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
