The Department of Mississippi Urban Research Center (MURC) at Jackson State University is accepting applications for its Research Associate/Analyst position.
Examples of Duties
- Conducting research focusing on criminal justice-related issues, especially issues related to gun violence and crime.
- Developing, designing, and implementing research studies.
- Collecting and analyzing both primary and secondary data (including U.S. Census Bureau data).
- Analyzing urban problems for root causes, policy, and/or programmatic implications.
- Writing research reports, policy/position papers, and grant applications addressing urban problems.
- Proposing recommendations, solutions, policies, programs, services, and interventions based upon research findings.
- Conducting focus groups and community meetings.
- Planning and conducting workshops, symposiums, forums, seminars, and/or conferences; serving on urban issues-related task forces and committees.
- Developing and administering surveys.
- Monitoring/tracking national, regional, statewide, and local urban-related issues (especially criminal justice-related) impacting urban areas.
- Interacting with community groups to discuss urban problems and potential solutions to those problems.
- Presenting research findings both orally and visually (e.g., research posters, data snapshots, infographics).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- Minimum Master's degree in criminal justice, police science, public policy, public administration, urban and regional planning, urban studies, social work, sociology, political science, psychology/mental health or related social science area.
- Minimum two years' experience working on criminal justice and/or related issues.
- Knowledge of policies, programs, services, and interventions addressing criminal justice-related issues.
- Experience developing, designing, and/or implementing research studies.
- Experience writing research reports, policy/position papers, and grant applications; experience preparing research posters.
- Experience collecting data using quantitative and qualitative methods.
- Experience using statistical analysis software and/or spreadsheets to analyze data and prepare reports.
- Experience presenting research findings in a public setting.
- Experience working with public, private, and/or non-profit groups in resolving urban related problems, especially those related to criminal justice.
