Which companies sponsor visas for data engineers in Montana?
Montana's data engineer sponsorship activity is led by healthcare organizations such as Billings Clinic and RiverStone Health, along with Montana State University and the University of Montana for research-oriented roles. Regional energy and natural resource companies with data infrastructure needs also appear in Department of Labor disclosure data. Sponsorship is more selective in Montana than in larger tech markets, so targeted research by employer is worthwhile.
Which visa types are most common for data engineer roles in Montana?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for data engineer positions in Montana, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Some university-affiliated positions may involve J-1 visa or O-1 visa categories. Canadian and Mexican nationals may be eligible for TN visa status, which covers computer systems analysts and similar technical roles under USMCA.
Which cities in Montana have the most data engineer sponsorship jobs?
Billings is Montana's largest city and the primary hub for sponsored data engineer roles, driven by its healthcare, finance, and energy sectors. Bozeman follows closely, supported by Montana State University's research programs and a small but active technology startup community. Missoula also generates openings, particularly through the University of Montana and regional healthcare employers. Helena sees occasional postings tied to state government and adjacent contractors.
How to find data engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Montana?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that include visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify data engineer positions in Montana without sorting through listings that don't apply to international candidates. Because Montana's sponsoring employer pool is smaller than coastal markets, using a focused tool like Migrate Mate, rather than broad general searches, helps surface relevant openings from healthcare systems, universities, and regional technology firms more efficiently.
Are there state-specific considerations for data engineers seeking sponsorship in Montana?
Montana follows federal prevailing wage requirements for H-1B positions, which are determined by the Department of Labor based on the Missoula, Billings, or Great Falls metropolitan statistical areas depending on work location. Because Montana's labor market is smaller, wage levels in some classifications may differ from national benchmarks. Montana State University in Bozeman also functions as a meaningful talent pipeline, and some graduates transition directly into sponsored roles with regional employers or remote positions with out-of-state sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data engineer jobs in Montana?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
