Which companies sponsor visas for attorneys in New Jersey?
Large employers with established legal departments are the most consistent sponsors. In New Jersey, these include pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and Novo Nordisk, major financial institutions with NJ operations, and global law firms with Newark or Roseland offices. In-house positions at Fortune 500 corporations headquartered in the state tend to have more structured sponsorship processes than smaller regional firms.
Which visa types are most common for attorney roles in New Jersey?
The H-1B is the most common visa for attorney roles, as the position typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a Juris Doctor degree. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican attorneys under specific conditions. O-1A visas are an option for attorneys with demonstrated extraordinary ability, such as significant published legal scholarship or high-profile case recognition. All pathways require employer sponsorship.
Which cities in New Jersey have the most attorney sponsorship jobs?
Newark is the largest legal market in New Jersey, home to federal courts and major firm offices. Parsippany and Florham Park host significant corporate legal departments for pharmaceutical and financial companies. Princeton attracts in-house counsel roles tied to the biotech and research corridor. Short Hills and Roseland have concentrations of regional and national firm offices that periodically sponsor foreign national attorneys.
How to find attorney visa sponsorship jobs in New Jersey?
Migrate Mate filters attorney roles in New Jersey specifically by visa sponsorship availability, which removes the guesswork of identifying which employers are open to sponsoring. Because many attorney postings do not explicitly mention sponsorship, Migrate Mate's curated data is particularly useful for narrowing to employers with a documented history of filing H-1B or other work visa petitions for legal professionals in the state.
Are there state-specific considerations for attorneys seeking visa sponsorship in New Jersey?
New Jersey requires attorneys to be admitted to the New Jersey State Bar to practice independently, which means foreign-educated lawyers typically need to pass the NJ bar exam and meet character and fitness requirements before most employers will sponsor them. However, some in-house roles and law firm positions hire foreign nationals before bar admission, particularly for research, compliance, or transactional support work that does not require a New Jersey license.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored attorney jobs in New Jersey?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
