Which companies sponsor visas for attorneys in Ohio?
The most active sponsors for attorney roles in Ohio include large law firms with Cleveland and Columbus offices, particularly Jones Day, Squire Patton Boggs, Baker Hostetler, and Vorys. Corporate legal departments at companies like Procter & Gamble, KeyCorp, and Nationwide Insurance also sponsor visa petitions for in-house counsel positions. Hospital systems and university legal offices occasionally sponsor as well.
Which visa types are most common for attorney roles in Ohio?
The H-1B is the most common visa for attorney positions in Ohio, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at minimum a Juris Doctor degree. O-1A visas are an option for attorneys with demonstrated extraordinary ability, such as published legal scholarship or significant case recognition. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican attorneys under USMCA for qualifying legal roles.
Which cities in Ohio have the most attorney sponsorship jobs?
Cleveland leads Ohio for attorney sponsorship activity, driven by its concentration of Am Law 200 firms and large financial and healthcare employers. Columbus is a close second, supported by state government-adjacent legal work and a growing corporate sector. Cincinnati rounds out the top three, with active legal markets tied to its manufacturing, consumer goods, and financial services industries.
How to find attorney visa sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate filters attorney roles in Ohio specifically by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from applying to positions where sponsorship is not on the table. You can search by practice area and city to narrow results to Cleveland, Columbus, or Cincinnati. Because attorney roles require licensure in addition to sponsorship, Migrate Mate listings can help you identify firms already familiar with foreign-educated candidate pipelines.
Are there state-specific considerations for attorneys seeking visa sponsorship in Ohio?
Foreign-educated attorneys in Ohio must pass the Ohio Bar Exam and meet character and fitness requirements set by the Ohio Supreme Court before practicing independently, regardless of visa status. Some sponsored roles are structured as legal research or compliance positions that do not require Ohio Bar admission, which can be relevant for attorneys still in the licensure process. Ohio's prevailing wage determinations for attorney H-1B petitions are set at the metropolitan area level, so wages differ across Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored attorney jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
