Which companies sponsor visas for construction project engineers in New York?
Large engineering and construction firms with significant New York operations are the most active sponsors. Turner Construction, AECOM, WSP Global, Skanska, and Liro Group have sponsored construction project engineers in New York through H-1B visa filings disclosed in Department of Labor data. Public sector contractors working on MTA, Port Authority, and NYSDOT projects also appear among sponsors, given the volume and scale of infrastructure work in the state.
Which visa types are most common for construction project engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for construction project engineers in New York, provided the role is classified as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or construction engineering. Candidates from Canada and Mexico may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA using the engineer category. Some senior professionals with extraordinary ability credentials pursue the O-1A as an alternative pathway.
Which cities in New York have the most construction project engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the large majority of construction project engineer sponsorship opportunities in the state, driven by ongoing commercial, transit, and residential development in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Buffalo is a secondary market with growing activity tied to semiconductor and clean energy infrastructure projects upstate, including investments stemming from the CHIPS Act. Albany also sees demand from state government and utility infrastructure work.
How to find construction project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters construction project engineer jobs in New York specifically by visa sponsorship status, so you're not sorting through listings that won't support international candidates. The platform aggregates roles from firms that have a documented history of sponsoring engineers. Searching on Migrate Mate by role and state lets you focus your applications on employers already open to H-1B or other visa-sponsored hires in this field.
Are there state-specific considerations for construction project engineers seeking sponsorship in New York?
New York sets prevailing wage requirements for many public works projects under the Wicks Law and Scaffold Law, which affects how employers structure compensation for engineers on those contracts. Roles tied to MTA, PANYNJ, or NYSDOT projects are often subject to these standards. Additionally, engineers working on licensed construction projects in New York may need to meet New York State Education Department requirements for professional engineer licensure, which is separate from visa requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored construction project engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
