Which companies sponsor visas for HVAC technicians in New York?
Large mechanical contractors and facilities management firms are the most active sponsors in New York. Companies like EMCOR Group, Comfort Systems USA, ABM Industries, and major hospital networks such as NewYork-Presbyterian have sponsored skilled trades workers. Commercial property management firms overseeing large building portfolios in New York City also sponsor technicians, particularly for roles requiring specialized experience with complex building automation and HVAC systems.
Which visa types are most common for HVAC technician roles in New York?
The H-2B visa is the most common path for HVAC technicians, covering temporary non-agricultural skilled workers when employers demonstrate a domestic labor shortage. The H-1B visa is generally not applicable since HVAC technician roles do not typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree. Some experienced technicians may qualify under the EB-3 immigrant visa for skilled workers if an employer is willing to sponsor permanent residency through the PERM labor certification process.
Which cities in New York have the most HVAC technician sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the largest share of HVAC technician openings, driven by its dense concentration of commercial skyscrapers, residential high-rises, and healthcare facilities requiring constant mechanical system maintenance. Buffalo and Albany have active hiring tied to manufacturing plants and government buildings. Long Island's commercial and healthcare sectors also generate consistent demand, particularly around the large hospital systems in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Are there any state-specific considerations for HVAC technicians seeking sponsorship in New York?
New York requires HVAC technicians to hold specific licenses depending on the work performed. New York City has its own licensing requirements separate from the rest of the state, including the Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractor license for certain systems. Employers sponsoring workers must pay prevailing wages as determined by the Department of Labor for the relevant job classification and county, which are set above basic federal minimums in New York's high-cost markets. Having EPA Section 608 certification strengthens any sponsorship application.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored hvac technician jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
