Which companies sponsor visas for interns in New York?
Large financial institutions, tech firms, and media conglomerates headquartered in New York are among the most active intern sponsors. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Google's New York offices, NBCUniversal, and major consulting firms like Deloitte and McKinsey have consistent track records of sponsoring international interns. Sponsorship is more common at large employers with established global mobility programs than at small or mid-size firms.
Which visa types are most common for intern roles in New York?
Most international interns in New York work under F-1 OPT or CPT, which allows students at U.S. universities to work without employer-filed sponsorship. For interns already outside the U.S., the J-1 visa exchange visitor visa through a designated sponsor program is the most accessible route. H-1B visa sponsorship for internships is rare because the role must qualify as a specialty occupation and the lottery makes short-term placements impractical.
Which cities in New York have the most intern sponsorship jobs?
Manhattan accounts for the overwhelming majority of sponsored intern opportunities in New York State, driven by its concentration of financial services, advertising, tech, and media employers. Brooklyn has grown as a secondary hub, particularly for tech startups and creative industries. Buffalo and Albany offer intern roles in healthcare, government, and education, though sponsorship volume in those cities is considerably lower than in the New York City metro area.
How to find intern visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters intern roles in New York by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from sifting through listings that won't support your status. Search by role type and location to surface employers actively hiring sponsored interns in finance, tech, media, and consulting across the New York metro. Creating a profile also helps you track new postings as they go live each recruiting cycle.
Are there state-specific factors that affect intern sponsorship in New York?
New York's density of Fortune 500 headquarters and global firm offices means intern programs here are often structured and formalized, with legal and HR teams already familiar with J-1 and OPT processes. University pipelines from Columbia, NYU, and Cornell Tech feed directly into New York City intern recruiting, and many employers specifically recruit from these programs. New York State labor laws also apply to interns, so sponsored positions are almost always paid roles rather than unpaid arrangements.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored intern jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
