Which companies sponsor visas for planners in New York?
New York's largest planning visa sponsors include AECOM, WSP USA, Jacobs Engineering, and STV Group, all of which maintain active H-1B visa filing histories for planning roles. The New York City Department of City Planning and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority also sponsor international planners, particularly for roles requiring urban design, transportation planning, or environmental review expertise.
Which visa types are most common for planner roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for planner roles in New York, covering positions like urban planner, transportation planner, and environmental planner when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as urban planning, architecture, or civil engineering. Some planners also qualify under the O-1A for extraordinary ability, and those with advanced degrees may pursue EB-2 NIW sponsorship through self-petition.
Which cities in New York have the most planner sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the large majority of planner sponsorship activity in the state, driven by its scale of development, transit infrastructure, and concentration of consulting firms and public agencies. Albany sees demand for state-level policy and land use planning roles, while Buffalo has grown as a hub for urban revitalization projects. Smaller mid-Hudson Valley cities also generate planning positions tied to regional development initiatives.
How to find planner visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to find planner roles in New York where employers have an active history of sponsoring international candidates. You can search by role and state to surface positions at public agencies, engineering consultancies, and real estate firms across the New York City metro and upstate regions, without sorting through listings from employers unlikely to sponsor.
Are there any state-specific considerations for planners seeking visa sponsorship in New York?
New York's prevailing wage requirements apply to H-1B petitions filed by New York-based employers, and the Department of Labor sets wage levels by metropolitan statistical area, meaning rates in the New York City metro are significantly higher than those in upstate regions. University planning programs at Columbia, Cornell, and NYU also create active pipelines into New York planning firms, and some graduates transition from OPT directly into H-1B sponsorship with their first employer.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored planner jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
