Which companies sponsor visas for principal software engineers in New York?
Large technology and financial services employers are the most consistent sponsors for principal software engineers in New York. Companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bloomberg, and Salesforce regularly file H-1B visa petitions for senior engineering roles. Enterprise software firms and well-funded startups in Manhattan and Brooklyn also sponsor at this level, particularly for roles requiring deep systems, distributed infrastructure, or machine learning expertise.
Which visa types are most common for principal software engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for principal software engineers in New York. Because this role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field, it fits the specialty occupation standard. Candidates with extraordinary ability may qualify for the O-1A. Australian citizens can explore the E-3 visa as a direct alternative to the H-1B. Some multinational employers also use the L-1A or L-1B for internal transfers into New York offices.
Which cities in New York have the most principal software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Manhattan accounts for the vast majority of principal software engineer sponsorship activity in New York, driven by the concentration of financial institutions, large tech campuses, and enterprise software companies. Brooklyn, particularly the DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn corridors, has grown as a secondary hub. Albany and Buffalo see limited sponsorship at this seniority level, with activity concentrated almost entirely in the New York City metro area.
How to find principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship jobs, including principal software engineer roles in New York. You can filter by role and state to see employers who have a history of sponsoring work visas for senior engineering positions. Because principal-level roles are often filled through internal pipelines or targeted outreach, using a focused sponsorship job board like Migrate Mate helps surface opportunities that may not appear on general platforms.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for principal software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
New York employers sponsoring H-1B workers must comply with Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements, which are calculated based on the specific metropolitan area. For principal engineers working in New York City, the prevailing wage is typically set against one of the highest regional benchmarks in the country. New York's concentration of financial services firms also means many sponsoring employers are subject to additional regulatory scrutiny, which can affect hiring timelines for senior technical roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal software engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
