Which companies sponsor visas for project engineers in New York?
Engineering and construction firms with significant New York operations have established H-1B sponsorship histories for project engineer roles. AECOM, Jacobs Engineering, Turner Construction, Skanska, and WSP Global are among the most active. Utilities such as ConEd and National Grid also sponsor project engineers regularly. Large infrastructure contractors working on MTA and Port Authority projects tend to have dedicated immigration support processes compared to smaller regional firms.
Which visa types are most common for project engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for project engineers in New York, provided the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related field. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for the TN visa under the engineer category, which avoids the H-1B lottery. Engineers with extraordinary ability or multinational transfer situations may explore O-1 or L-1 pathways, though these are less typical for standard project engineer positions.
Which cities in New York have the most project engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the large majority of project engineer sponsorship activity in the state, driven by ongoing construction, transit expansion, and utility infrastructure work. Buffalo has grown as a secondary hub with manufacturing and clean energy projects attracting engineering talent. Albany sees demand tied to state government infrastructure programs. Firms working on the MTA's capital program and Hudson Yards-scale developments concentrate hiring heavily in the New York City metro area.
How to find project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters project engineer roles specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search New York postings without sorting through employers who don't sponsor. The platform is built for international candidates, so listings reflect employers actively open to H-1B and other work visa categories. Focusing your search on engineering firms with New York City infrastructure contracts or statewide utility projects gives you the strongest pool of sponsorship-eligible opportunities.
Are there state-specific considerations for project engineers seeking sponsorship in New York?
New York's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor rules mean sponsors must pay certified wage levels tied to the job location, which vary between New York City and upstate regions. Project engineers working on publicly funded construction projects may also fall under New York State prevailing wage laws, separate from federal H-1B requirements. Engineering roles in New York often require PE licensure for senior positions, so understanding which roles require licensure versus which accept EIT status helps in targeting the right openings.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored project engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
