Which companies sponsor visas for structural project engineers in New York?
Engineering and architecture firms with a strong New York presence are the most active sponsors for structural project engineers. AECOM, WSP Global, Arup, Thornton Tomasetti, Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and Langan Engineering appear regularly in Department of Labor LCA disclosure data for structural and civil engineering roles. Large construction management firms and public agencies like the MTA and Port Authority also hire structural engineers, though direct sponsorship patterns vary by organization.
Which visa types are most common for structural project engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for structural project engineers in New York, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering. The O-1A is an option for engineers with demonstrated exceptional ability, though the evidentiary standard is high. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN status under the engineer category, which does not require a lottery.
Which cities in New York have the most structural project engineer sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the overwhelming majority of structural project engineer sponsorship activity in the state, driven by its volume of high-rise construction, bridge and tunnel infrastructure, and transit projects. Albany has some presence through state agency work and consulting firms. Buffalo is a smaller but growing market, particularly for infrastructure rehabilitation tied to federal investment programs. Most international candidates targeting New York focus their search on the five boroughs and surrounding metro area.
How to find structural project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship, making it more efficient than searching general job boards for structural project engineer positions in New York. You can filter by state and role to surface firms actively hiring in the New York metro area. Reviewing Department of Labor LCA disclosure data alongside Migrate Mate listings can help you identify which specific employers have filed for structural engineering roles before.
Are there state-specific factors that affect visa sponsorship for structural project engineers in New York?
New York's prevailing wage requirements under DOL rules tend to be among the highest in the country, reflecting the cost of living in the metro area. Employers sponsoring H-1B workers must certify that the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for the specific role and location, which is determined by the Standard Occupational Classification code and the relevant wage survey data. Engineers working on publicly funded infrastructure projects may also be subject to New York State's own prevailing wage regulations under the Labor Law.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural project engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
