Major sponsors for IT technical support roles in North Carolina include Lenovo (headquartered in Morrisville), Cisco, IBM, Bank of America, and Duke University Health System. Large enterprise employers and research institutions in the Research Triangle and Charlotte metro areas have established track records of filing H-1B visa petitions for IT support and systems administration positions.
Which visa types are most common for IT technical support roles in North Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa for IT technical support roles in North Carolina, provided the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field like computer science or information systems. North Carolina's Research Triangle Park is one of the largest research and technology campuses in the United States, and its concentration of Fortune 500 offices, biotech firms, and universities creates a market where IT support roles are often tied to complex enterprise environments, making degree-field alignment particularly important for H-1B specialty occupation eligibility. Employers at NC State, Duke, and UNC are also cap-exempt institutions, which can affect H-1B filing timelines for roles based at those campuses.

U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
