Drive Innovation as our Next Mechanical Design Engineer (Inertial Sensors)!
Ready to shape the future of machine automation and heavy industries?
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to architect, implement, and validate cutting-edge inertial sensor technology that directly guides massive earthmoving and paving machines across the globe.
About us
Trimble is a global technology company that connects the physical and digital worlds, transforming the ways work gets done. With relentless innovation in precise positioning, modeling and data analytics, Trimble enables essential industries including construction, geospatial and transportation. Whether it's helping customers build and maintain infrastructure, design and construct buildings, optimize global supply chains or map the world, Trimble is at the forefront, driving productivity and progress.
Field Systems: The Trimble Field Systems segment provides solutions to increase precision and productivity in construction tasks by empowering stakeholders to collect accurate information and manage conditions with cutting-edge technology. Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies (CTCT) is a joint venture under our Field Systems Segment here at Trimble.
CTCT develops advanced machine control, guidance, and positioning systems for the heavy construction, earthmoving, and mining industries. By combining Trimble's precision positioning technologies (like GNSS/GPS, lasers, optics, and sonics) with Caterpillar’s heavy machinery expertise, CTCT builds software and hardware that automates and optimizes equipment operations.
The core focus of CTCT is Grade Control Solutions (such as the Cat Grade 3D and Trimble Earthworks platforms). These systems give machine operators precise, real-time vertical and horizontal guidance inside the cab, allowing bulldozers, excavators, scrapers, and graders to cut, fill, and level earth to exact 3D design specifications.
What Makes This Role Great
In this role, you will own the mechanical architecture of high-precision Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) from early concept through high-volume production, creating robust designs that withstand the most demanding construction environments. Working within a high-impact joint venture between two industry giants, your mechanical innovations will directly control and automate heavy machinery worldwide.
Key Exciting Responsibilities
- Architect and develop mechanical concepts for next-generation Inertial Sensors (IMUs), translating product requirements into clear mechanical specifications.
- Lead new product designs completely from concept through production, managing the mechanical BOM and identifying Key Product Characteristics.
- Conduct rigorous design analyses and generate technical documentation, including DFMEAs, finite element analysis (FEA), and precision tolerance stack-ups.
- Design, direct, and oversee comprehensive validation testing to ensure structural and environmental performance meets strict survival criteria.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams, lead design reviews, and deliver impactful technical presentations to customers and internal stakeholders.
Essential Skills & Experience
- You hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- You bring 5+ years of experience in new product design and development, specifically within rugged product sectors like automotive or sensors.
- You possess hands-on design experience with diverse fabrication methods, including injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, and cast metal components.
- You are skilled in digital simulation methodologies and tools, covering FEA, Moldflow, structural, and thermal analysis.
- You have a strong understanding of product lifecycle management (PLM) and robust change management procedures.
Bonus Points For
- Dedicated experience in sensor mechanical design.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, specifically utilizing PTC Creo.
- Deep experience troubleshooting mechanical failures in bolted joints, dynamic seals, gaskets, and moisture ingress.
- Familiarity with random vibration and shock concepts, incorporating them into dynamic simulation workflows.
- Experience with Matlab and designing mechanical components for Functional Safety standards.
Logistics
- Location: Dayton, OH
- Travel Requirement: 10%

Which manufacturing companies in Ohio sponsor TN visas?
Large Ohio manufacturers with documented TN sponsorship activity include Honda of America (Marysville), Timken (Canton), Parker Hannifin (Cleveland), Dana Incorporated (Maumee), and Procter & Gamble (Cincinnati). Automotive suppliers clustered along the I-75 corridor and aerospace manufacturers in the Dayton area also consistently hire TN-eligible professionals. Sponsorship is more common at mid-to-large employers with established HR and immigration compliance functions.
Which Ohio cities have the most manufacturing TN sponsorship jobs?
Toledo and Columbus lead for automotive and industrial manufacturing hiring, with Toledo's I-75 corridor home to a dense network of Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto suppliers. Cincinnati and Dayton are strong for aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Cleveland and Youngstown retain significant activity in metal fabrication and industrial equipment. Each metro has distinct industry concentrations, so targeting your job search by sector as well as city improves your results.
What types of manufacturing roles typically qualify for TN sponsorship?
TN-eligible manufacturing roles generally fall under engineer categories, including mechanical, industrial, electrical, and chemical engineers, as well as computer systems analysts, management consultants, and certain scientific roles. The position must meet the specialty occupation requirement tied to a specific TN profession listed under USMCA. Production supervisors, general managers, and skilled trades roles typically do not qualify, as they generally do not require a qualifying university degree in a listed discipline.
How do I find manufacturing TN sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN-eligible professionals and lets you filter manufacturing jobs in Ohio by visa type, so every listing you see is from an employer open to TN sponsorship. Because TN eligibility depends on both the role category and your specific degree, Migrate Mate's filters help you quickly identify positions that align with qualifying TN professions rather than sorting through generic job postings where sponsorship is unclear.
Are there any Ohio-specific considerations for TN sponsorship in manufacturing?
Ohio's manufacturing sector is heavily tied to automotive supply chains, which means hiring cycles often align with OEM production schedules and model-year transitions, creating seasonal demand patterns. Many Ohio manufacturers operate under federal defense or aerospace contracts, which can add additional compliance layers for employers. Canadian citizens can apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry, including Detroit-Windsor and Buffalo, both practical land crossings for Ohio-based roles.
