The successful candidate will be hands-on, technically strong, and comfortable working directly with customers and manufacturing teams.
Responsibilities:
- Be liaison between development engineering and operations
- Conduct design-for-automation reviews for Overpass cable and interconnect products.
- Identify opportunities and constraints for automated assembly, installation, inspection, and test during product development.
- Recommend design changes to improve automation compatibility, repeatability, handling/orientation, and process robustness including introduction of emerging technologies
- Participate in DFx reviews (DFM/DFT), FMEAs, and manufacturing-readiness assessments; document automation-related risks and mitigations.
- Define and help standardize design guidelines and best practices for automated Overpass cable installation.
- Support customers developing automated or semi-automated systems for Overpass cable installation into platforms.
- Provide technical input on cable presentation, pick-and-place concepts, routing/insertion strategy, retention, force control, and vision inspection/verification.
- Collaborate with customer engineering teams to review system-level constraints and recommend automation-compatible installation approaches.
- Support fixture concepts, tooling requirements, cable handling methods, and process-flow recommendations for customer and internal use.
- Support customer trials, proof-of-concept builds, and validation activities; troubleshoot automation-related installation issues and drive corrective actions.
- Define equipment, tooling, fixture, and process requirements to scale manufacturing from prototype/pilot to high-volume production.
- Prepare automation equipment and tooling specifications for handling, routing, assembly, inspection, and test processes.
- Support installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, validation, and ramp-up of automation systems at manufacturing sites as needed.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, training materials, and validation plans for automated or semi-automated processes.
- Collaborate cross-functionally (product development, NPI, process, quality, operations, suppliers) to communicate risks/constraints and ensure automation solutions are safe, maintainable, scalable, and manufacturable.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in automation engineering, manufacturing engineering, process engineering, equipment engineering, or related technical role.

Which companies sponsor visas for automation engineers in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania has a strong base of manufacturers and technology firms with documented H-1B visa sponsorship histories for automation engineers. Companies including Siemens, Westinghouse Electric, Johnson and Johnson, Air Products, and Carpenter Technology have filed Labor Condition Applications for automation-related roles. Pittsburgh's growing robotics ecosystem, anchored by companies tied to Carnegie Mellon University spinouts, also generates consistent sponsorship activity for controls and systems automation positions.
Which visa types are most common for automation engineer roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for automation engineers in Pennsylvania, as the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related specialty field. Engineers from Canada and Mexico may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA-successor USMCA agreement, which covers certain engineering categories without requiring employer lottery participation. Candidates with extraordinary ability credentials may also explore the O-1 visa classification.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most automation engineer sponsorship jobs?
Pittsburgh leads Pennsylvania for automation engineer sponsorship activity, driven by its manufacturing heritage, robotics research institutions, and the presence of large industrial employers. Philadelphia and its suburban counties, particularly Delaware and Montgomery Counties, offer opportunities in pharmaceutical manufacturing and defense contracting, both sectors with high demand for process and systems automation engineers. The Lehigh Valley corridor, home to significant logistics and manufacturing operations, is also an active hiring area.
How to find automation engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship eligibility, making it straightforward to browse automation engineer roles in Pennsylvania without sorting through positions that do not offer sponsorship. The platform aggregates openings across Pennsylvania's manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and technology sectors. Filtering by location and role category on Migrate Mate surfaces employers with active sponsorship histories in cities including Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and the Lehigh Valley.
Are there state-specific considerations for automation engineers seeking sponsorship in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania's concentration of legacy manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, and defense contractors shapes the automation engineering market in ways that differ from pure tech hubs. Prevailing wage determinations for automation engineers here are benchmarked against Department of Labor data for Pennsylvania metro areas, which can vary meaningfully between Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and smaller industrial regions. Engineers with backgrounds in process control, PLC programming, or robotics systems tend to align well with the state's dominant industries and employer sponsorship patterns.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored automation engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
