Which companies sponsor visas for civil engineers in Pennsylvania?
Large engineering and infrastructure firms are the most consistent sponsors for civil engineers in Pennsylvania. AECOM, WSP, Michael Baker International, Pennoni, and KCI Technologies have all filed Labor Condition Applications for civil engineering roles in the state. Public agencies working with contractors on PennDOT and municipal water projects also generate sponsorship demand, typically through their engineering subconsultants.
Which visa types are most common for civil engineer roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for civil engineers in Pennsylvania, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Candidates from Canada and Mexico may pursue TN visa status under the USMCA, which covers engineers and allows for a more straightforward process at the border without USCIS petition filing.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most civil engineer sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh account for the majority of civil engineering visa sponsorship activity in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia's ongoing transit, water infrastructure, and development projects sustain consistent demand, while Pittsburgh draws on its legacy of heavy infrastructure and bridge rehabilitation work. Harrisburg, as the state capital, also generates openings tied to PennDOT headquarters and state agency contracting.
How to find civil engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to find civil engineer roles in Pennsylvania without sifting through positions that don't support international candidates. You can search by location and role type to surface openings from firms actively sponsoring. This saves significant time compared to manually checking which employers have a history of H-1B or TN filings.
Are there any state-specific considerations for civil engineers seeking sponsorship in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania requires civil engineers to hold a Professional Engineer license for certain public-facing work, though most sponsored entry-level and mid-level roles are filled by candidates working toward licensure under supervision. The state's active transportation and water infrastructure pipeline, partly funded through federal infrastructure programs, has increased demand for engineers with environmental, geotechnical, and structural specializations, which strengthens the sponsorship case for those skill sets.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored civil engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
