Which companies in Michigan sponsor visas for civil engineers?
Engineering consulting firms with Michigan offices are among the most active H-1B sponsors for civil engineers. AECOM, WSP, Jacobs Engineering, and Tetra Tech have filed H-1B petitions for civil engineering roles in the state. The Michigan Department of Transportation and municipal engineering agencies can also sponsor certain work visas, though public-sector sponsorship varies by position and funding structure.
What visa types are most common for civil engineers working in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa for civil engineers in Michigan, as civil engineering generally qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in the field. Engineers from Canada or Mexico may also pursue the TN visa under the USMCA, which applies directly to civil engineers as a listed profession and does not require an employer petition through USCIS.
Which Michigan cities have the most civil engineer visa sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding suburbs, including Troy, Southfield, and Auburn Hills, concentrate the most civil engineering sponsorship activity due to proximity to automotive campuses and large infrastructure projects. Grand Rapids is an active secondary market, particularly for municipal and construction-related engineering. Lansing sees steady demand tied to state government infrastructure work and Michigan State University-adjacent development projects.
How to find civil engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters civil engineer roles in Michigan by visa sponsorship eligibility, saving significant time compared to general job searches. You can browse current openings, see which employers have sponsorship histories, and focus your applications on firms actively hiring engineers who need visa support. Filtering by Michigan and civil engineering together surfaces the most relevant opportunities.
Are there any Michigan-specific factors civil engineers should know about visa sponsorship?
Michigan's heavy reliance on infrastructure renewal, including federally funded bridge and road projects under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, has expanded engineering hiring across the state. Employers on federally funded projects must comply with prevailing wage requirements under the Davis-Bacon Act, which aligns with the DOL wage requirements tied to H-1B certification. Michigan also has a strong pipeline from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, which means competition from locally graduating engineers is a real factor for international applicants.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored civil engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
