Which companies sponsor visas for social workers in Pennsylvania?
Large health systems are among the most active sponsors, including UPMC, Jefferson Health, and Penn Medicine in Philadelphia. County departments of human services, community mental health centers, and nonprofit agencies such as Catholic Social Services and Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health also have sponsorship histories. Hospital-based social work positions within major academic medical centers tend to offer the most consistent sponsorship pathways for international candidates.
Which visa types are most common for social worker roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common visa for licensed clinical social workers, as MSW-level positions requiring a specific degree generally qualify as specialty occupations. The J-1 exchange visitor visa is also used, particularly for clinical training roles affiliated with academic medical centers. Candidates with a relevant national interest waiver case may pursue the EB-2 NIW, especially those working in underserved communities, though this is an immigrant visa pathway rather than a work visa.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most social worker sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia accounts for the largest share of social worker sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania, driven by its concentration of hospital systems, behavioral health providers, and county human services agencies. Pittsburgh is the second-largest market, anchored by UPMC and Allegheny County human services. Allentown, Harrisburg, and Scranton also have active hiring markets, particularly within community mental health and child welfare organizations serving those regions.
How to find social worker visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate is designed specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and lets you filter social worker roles by state, so you can browse Pennsylvania-specific openings from employers with sponsorship history. When reviewing listings, look for positions at health systems, county agencies, and nonprofits that explicitly mention H-1B sponsorship or have sponsored roles in the past. Having your MSW and Pennsylvania licensure documentation ready will strengthen your applications significantly.
Are there state-specific considerations for social workers pursuing visa sponsorship in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania requires licensed social workers to hold either an LSW or LCSW credential from the State Board of Social Workers, and most sponsored positions expect candidates to be license-eligible or already licensed at time of hire. Employers filing H-1B petitions must meet the prevailing wage set by the Department of Labor for the specific county where the position is located, which varies between Philadelphia metro and rural Pennsylvania markets. Candidates with graduate degrees from CSWE-accredited programs are best positioned for specialty occupation approval.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored social worker jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
