Which companies sponsor visas for software engineers in Puerto Rico?
Technology firms with established Puerto Rico operations, including Microsoft, Oracle, and IBM, have historically sponsored software engineers on the island. Financial technology companies and government contractors working with federal agencies also sponsor visa holders. Puerto Rico's tax incentive programs have attracted technology-focused businesses that are more open to international hiring than smaller local employers.
Which visa types are most common for software engineer roles in Puerto Rico?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for software engineers in Puerto Rico, as the territory falls under U.S. federal immigration jurisdiction. Software engineering meets the specialty occupation requirement because roles consistently require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some engineers also enter on L-1 visa intracompany transfer visas when moving within a multinational employer.
Which cities in Puerto Rico have the most software engineer sponsorship jobs?
San Juan and its surrounding metropolitan area, including Guaynabo and Bayamon, account for the overwhelming majority of software engineer sponsorship opportunities in Puerto Rico. This is where most technology employers, federal contractors, and financial services firms maintain their operations. Caguas and Ponce have smaller but growing technology presences, particularly tied to government and healthcare IT projects.
How to find software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Puerto Rico?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse software engineer roles in Puerto Rico without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. Because Puerto Rico's sponsoring employer pool is smaller than major mainland markets, using a focused tool matters more here. Migrate Mate surfaces roles from companies that have demonstrated sponsorship history, saving significant research time.
Are there any Puerto Rico-specific considerations for software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Puerto Rico operates under U.S. federal immigration law, so H-1B rules, lottery timelines, and USCIS processes are identical to the mainland. However, the local employer pool is smaller, meaning fewer companies file Labor Condition Applications for software engineers annually. Puerto Rico's university system, including the University of Puerto Rico, produces local engineering graduates, so sponsored roles tend to require specialized skills or experience that the local talent market doesn't fully cover.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software engineer jobs in Puerto Rico?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
