Which companies in Tennessee sponsor visas for backend engineers?
Healthcare IT companies are the most consistent sponsors in Tennessee. HCA Healthcare, Change Healthcare, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have a track record of filing H-1B visa petitions for backend engineers. Nashville-based fintech firms like AllianceBernstein and Avenue Bank also sponsor, as do larger consulting firms with Tennessee offices. Sponsorship activity is most concentrated in Nashville, with smaller volumes coming from Knoxville and Memphis.
What visa types are most commonly used for backend engineer roles in Tennessee?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa category for backend engineers in Tennessee, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Some backend engineers at multinational firms may also qualify for the L-1B intracompany transfer visa. Candidates from Australia and Canada may find the E-3 visa and TN visa categories available through qualifying employers as well.
Which cities in Tennessee have the most backend engineer visa sponsorship jobs?
Nashville accounts for the large majority of backend engineer sponsorship activity in Tennessee, driven by its concentration of healthcare IT companies, fintech firms, and growing startup ecosystem. Knoxville has a smaller but notable presence tied to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Tennessee spin-offs. Memphis sees backend engineering demand primarily from logistics and supply chain technology companies, including those connected to FedEx operations.
How to find backend engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Tennessee?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and lets you filter backend engineer roles by state, including Tennessee. Rather than sifting through general job boards and guessing which employers sponsor, Migrate Mate surfaces roles from companies with a documented history of sponsorship. For backend engineers targeting Nashville's healthcare IT or fintech sectors specifically, filtering by those industries on Migrate Mate will give the most relevant results.
Are there any state-specific factors backend engineers should know when pursuing sponsorship in Tennessee?
Tennessee has no state income tax on wages, which can make total compensation more attractive compared to states with higher tax burdens, though this does not directly affect the visa sponsorship process. The state's healthcare IT concentration means backend engineers with experience in HL7, FHIR, or EHR systems are particularly competitive for sponsored roles. University pipelines from Vanderbilt, the University of Tennessee, and Tennessee Tech also mean employers in the state have established OPT-to-H-1B pathways already in place.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend engineer jobs in Tennessee?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
