Overview
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to fill an interim position as a Commercial Vehicle Operations Specialist. This role involves direct public interaction and requires both technical and administrative expertise. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing a wide range of motor vehicle applications, including registrations, titles, and driver licenses, as well as handling suspensions and reinstatements. This position demands a high level of accuracy, accountability, and the ability to provide exceptional customer service.
This position will:
- Review, verify, and process applications for vehicle registrations, titles, licenses, permits, and identification cards.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to the public in completing applications and securing necessary documents.
- Detect and address potential fraud or irregularities in applications.
- Collect and manage fees, maintain escrow accounts, and ensure accurate daily financial reconciliations.
- Administer written, road, and Commercial Driver Permit exams, requiring certification as a Knowledge Examiner.
- Mentor and train new employees, providing progress reports to supervisors.
- Act as a supervisor in their absence, ensuring adequate staffing and operational continuity.
- Manage office supplies, complete daily deposits, and compile weekly statistical reports.
- Execute Driver Improvement functions, including processing suspensions and reinstatements.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with the public and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently within established legal guidelines.
- Experience in a customer service or administrative role, preferably within a government or regulatory environment.
- Proficiency in using office software and electronic processing systems.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to different office locations.

In accordance with Title 23, Section 102(d), an applicant must agree to be finger-printed and pass a background investigation to be eligible for this position. The background investigation may include criminal, financial and traffic records checks. Hiring managers will notify applicants who are in the final stage of the interview process of the finger-printing and background check requirement, to which an applicant must agree to be deemed eligible for this position. Environmental Factors
Duties are performed predominantly in an office setting. Incumbents must be adaptable and able to work within tight deadlines and under considerable stress while in the public eye and from phone inquiries. Incumbent must be able to deal with confused, frustrated, and highly upset customers and handle large sums of money. Some evening and weekend duty may be necessary. Private means of transportation may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School or equivalent AND four (4) or more years of experience in a customer service environment that included: use of computer programs; clerical and data entry work; applying and explaining policies/procedures or rules/regulations; and using math to complete financial transactions.
OR
Two (2) years or more of experience processing registration transactions in the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles.
