Which technology companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in Virginia?
Northern Virginia is home to some of the most active STEM OPT sponsors in the country. Companies such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, Amazon Web Services, Capital One, and Accenture Federal Services have filed Labor Condition Applications for technology roles in Virginia. Defense IT contractors and cloud infrastructure firms in the region file consistently across software engineering, data analytics, and cybersecurity job families.
Which cities in Virginia have the most technology F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Tysons, Arlington, Reston, and Herndon in the Northern Virginia corridor account for the largest share of technology STEM OPT sponsorship activity in the state. McLean and Fairfax also host significant employer concentrations. Richmond has a growing fintech and state government IT sector, while Virginia Beach has defense-adjacent technology employers. Northern Virginia's proximity to federal agencies and the AWS data center cluster makes it the dominant hiring zone.
How do I find technology F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters technology jobs in Virginia specifically by F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship history, using DOL Labor Condition Application filing data to show which employers have actively sponsored the visa type. You can search by role, location, and employer without manually cross-referencing OFLC disclosure files. Migrate Mate surfaces software engineering, data science, and cybersecurity roles from Virginia employers with verified sponsorship records.
What types of technology roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in Virginia?
Roles that qualify for STEM OPT must fall under a STEM-designated degree field as defined by DHS and must involve practical application of that degree. In Virginia's technology sector, commonly qualifying positions include software engineer, data scientist, machine learning engineer, cloud infrastructure engineer, cybersecurity analyst, and systems engineer. The role must be directly related to your STEM degree program. USCIS and your DSO can confirm whether a specific position meets the practical training requirement.
Are there state-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in technology roles in Virginia?
Virginia employers in the defense and federal contracting sector may require security clearance eligibility, which can affect F-1 students since clearance sponsorship for non-citizens is subject to agency discretion. Additionally, many Northern Virginia technology employers are E-Verify enrolled, which is a federal requirement for all STEM OPT employers. Confirming E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer is a necessary step, as STEM OPT authorization depends on it per USCIS regulations.
