Tips for Finding H-2B Sponsorship Jobs in Virginia
Target Virginia's coastal and resort employers early
Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore ramp up hiring for H-2B roles months before peak season. Reaching out to resort hotels, seafood processors, and waterpark operators in January or February gives you the best shot at an open petition.
Understand the H-2B cap and petition timing
H-2B visas are subject to a federal cap, and Virginia employers file petitions as early as possible to secure slots. Ask prospective employers directly whether they've filed or plan to file, and confirm their start date aligns with cap release windows.
Focus on industries with recurring seasonal patterns
Landscaping companies in Northern Virginia and hospitality businesses in the Shenandoah Valley return to H-2B sponsorship year after year. Employers with a history of sponsorship are far more likely to navigate the process smoothly than first-time filers.
Use Migrate Mate to filter by visa type and state
When searching for H-2B roles, browsing Migrate Mate and filtering by Virginia and H-2B visa type surfaces employers who have already committed to sponsorship, saving time compared to cold-calling businesses to ask about their visa policies.
Verify the employer has an approved labor certification
For H-2B sponsorship to proceed, the employer must obtain a temporary labor certification from the Department of Labor before filing with USCIS. Ask any Virginia employer early in the process whether their DOL certification has been approved.
Look beyond Virginia Beach to secondary markets
Fredericksburg, Luray, and Williamsburg have active seasonal hospitality and outdoor recreation industries that regularly sponsor H-2B workers. These markets often have less competition for available roles than the major coastal destinations.

Which industries in Virginia sponsor the most H-2B visas?
Hospitality and food service lead H-2B visa sponsorship in Virginia, particularly hotels, resorts, and seafood processing operations along the coast. Landscaping and groundskeeping companies in Northern Virginia and the Richmond suburbs are also consistent sponsors. Amusement parks, outdoor recreation businesses, and seasonal retail operations round out the primary sponsoring industries.
Which cities in Virginia have the most H-2B sponsorship jobs?
Virginia Beach has the highest concentration of H-2B sponsoring employers, driven by its large hospitality and seafood sectors. Northern Virginia cities like Fairfax and Arlington see consistent landscaping and groundskeeping sponsorship. Charlottesville, Williamsburg, and Luray also have active H-2B markets tied to tourism, historic attractions, and Shenandoah Valley resorts.
What types of roles typically qualify for H-2B sponsorship in Virginia?
H-2B covers temporary nonagricultural roles that are seasonal, peak-load, intermittent, or one-time in nature. In Virginia, qualifying positions commonly include housekeepers, landscapers, ride operators, seafood packers, and food service workers. The role must be unskilled or semi-skilled, clearly temporary, and the employer must demonstrate that qualified U.S. workers aren't available to fill it.
How do I find H-2B sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Virginia employers actively sponsoring H-2B visas, since listings are filtered by visa type and state. You can also contact Virginia Beach resort hotels, landscaping contractors in Northern Virginia, and Shenandoah Valley attractions directly in the fall or winter, before peak-season petitions are filed.
What is the prevailing wage for H-2B jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
