Which companies sponsor visas for program managers in Virginia?
Northern Virginia's defense and technology sectors produce some of the most active program manager sponsors in the country. Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, SAIC, General Dynamics IT, and Perspecta have consistent H-1B visa filing histories for program management roles. On the commercial side, Amazon Web Services, Capital One, and Freddie Mac also sponsor program managers regularly. Federal contractor roles, however, often require security clearances that can complicate sponsorship timelines for foreign nationals.
Which visa types are most common for program manager roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most common visa for program managers in Virginia, particularly at large defense contractors and technology firms. The L-1A is another pathway for managers transferring from a foreign parent or subsidiary into a Virginia office. Candidates with an Australian passport may consider the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and follows a similar process to the H-1B. Program management generally qualifies as a specialty occupation when the role requires a bachelor's degree in a related field.
Which cities in Virginia have the most program manager sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia, specifically Arlington, Reston, McLean, and Fairfax, accounts for the overwhelming majority of program manager sponsorship activity in the state. This corridor sits adjacent to federal agencies in the DC metro area and hosts headquarters for major defense and technology contractors. Richmond has a smaller but growing presence, particularly in financial services and state government IT. Hampton Roads sees program manager demand tied to defense and naval contracting around Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
How to find program manager visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate lets you filter program manager jobs by state, so you can browse Virginia-specific roles from employers with active sponsorship histories. Because many Virginia program manager positions are tied to government contracts, it's worth filtering for employers with established H-1B or L-1 visa filing records rather than applying broadly. Migrate Mate surfaces those employers specifically, which saves significant time compared to reviewing unfiltered job listings.
Are there any state-specific considerations for program managers seeking visa sponsorship in Virginia?
Virginia's heavy concentration of federal contractors adds a layer of complexity not present in most other states. Many program manager roles require a security clearance, which typically cannot be initiated for individuals in visa-dependent status until permanent residency is established, effectively closing off some positions. Candidates should prioritize roles at commercial technology employers or at contractors explicitly open to sponsoring non-cleared positions. Virginia also participates in the prevailing wage system, so employers must meet Department of Labor wage requirements for the relevant occupation and region.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored program manager jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
