ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We’re looking for a hands-on Software Architect with strong experience building distributed systems in enterprise SaaS environments. This role is ideal for a senior engineer/architect who is passionate about shaping modern engineering practices, improving architectural foundations, and driving change across the SDLC. While the focus of this role is to improve security across Cvent’s platform, we are specifically seeking an architect who thinks and operates like a product-minded developer, not a traditional security specialist.
- Shape and lead a company-wide engineering guild focused on secure-by-default practices, modern SDLC patterns, and architectural consistency across Cvent’s SaaS platforms.
- Design and build developer-centric frameworks, libraries, and automation that improve system reliability, maintainability, and security—without slowing delivery.
- Work hands-on in code (Java, TypeScript, IaC) to create reusable components, integration patterns, and platform building blocks used across engineering teams.
- Enhance CI/CD pipelines with guardrails, automated checks, and feedback loops that improve code quality, reduce vulnerabilities, and streamline developer workflows.
- Partner with product, platform, and cloud engineering teams to evolve architecture standards, ensuring distributed systems are scalable, observable, and resilient.
- Lead design reviews and provide architectural guidance across services, APIs, storage systems, and cloud infrastructure, helping teams make high-quality technical decisions.
- Introduce modern engineering patterns and tooling, including AI-assisted static analysis, automated detection systems, and secure-by-default scaffolding.
- Build documentation, best practices, and training materials that raise engineering excellence and empower developers to own security as part of system design.
- Collaborate with external partners and vendors to evaluate new technologies and integrate capabilities into platform workflows.
- Mentor engineers and influence engineering culture, promoting craftsmanship, simplicity, and scalable design across the stack.
- Help guide long-term architectural strategy, adapting secure development practices to new technologies and emerging patterns (e.g., AI systems, microservices evolution, event-driven architectures).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 10+ years of experience building and architecting distributed systems for enterprise or large-scale SaaS platforms.
- Strong hands-on coding experience with Java, TypeScript, cloud-native services, and infrastructure-as-code (CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, etc.).
- Deep understanding of system design, data structures, algorithms, networking, caching, and persistence technologies.
- Experience designing and implementing automation in CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to modernize engineering practices across multiple teams through frameworks, tooling, and shared architectural patterns.
- Familiarity with foundational security engineering principles—secure coding, service hardening, identity and access models, threat considerations—even if not in a security-only role.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence engineers, product teams, and leadership.
- A track record of solving complex problems, driving change, and mentoring engineers through architectural decisions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience improving security posture in a large-scale distributed SaaS environment.
- Hands-on knowledge of AWS architecture (IAM, KMS, networking, load balancing, etc.).
- Understanding of compliance frameworks (SOC 2, PCI, HIPAA, etc.) and how engineering teams build systems that meet those requirements.
- Experience with threat modeling, design reviews, and platform-level security patterns.
- Ability to make long-term architectural decisions (4-10 years) aligned with platform and business strategy.
- Experience evaluating technologies, running POCs, or leading due diligence during acquisitions.
- Experience presenting technical topics to engineering organizations or external audiences.
Join Cvent as a Software Architect and help shape the next generation of our secure, scalable, developer-friendly SaaS platform. If you’re a hands-on builder who loves improving systems, influencing engineering culture, and embedding secure-by-default patterns across distributed architectures, we’d love to meet you.

Which companies sponsor visas for software architects in Virginia?
Large federal contractors and cloud providers lead sponsorship activity in Virginia. Amazon Web Services, Leidos, SAIC, Booz Allen Hamilton, General Dynamics IT, and Accenture Federal Services have all filed Labor Condition Applications for software architect roles. Many mid-size government IT firms in the Northern Virginia corridor also sponsor regularly, particularly for roles tied to cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and enterprise systems modernization.
Which visa types are most common for software architect roles in Virginia?
The H-1B is the most commonly used visa for software architects in Virginia, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. L-1A and L-1B visas are also used for intracompany transfers into Virginia offices. O-1 visas are less common but do appear for architects with demonstrated exceptional expertise.
Which cities in Virginia have the most software architect sponsorship jobs?
Northern Virginia dominates, with Herndon, Fairfax, Arlington, Reston, and McLean concentrating the majority of sponsorship activity. This area sits adjacent to federal agencies and major cloud data center campuses, driving persistent demand for senior architecture talent. Richmond and Charlottesville have smaller but active markets, often tied to financial services firms and university-adjacent technology companies.
How to find software architect visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically to employers who sponsor work visas, so you can search software architect roles in Virginia without manually screening hundreds of postings. The platform focuses on international candidates, making it easier to identify active opportunities in Northern Virginia's federal IT sector, cloud infrastructure firms, and enterprise software companies that are open to H-1B and other visa sponsorship.
Are there any Virginia-specific considerations for software architects pursuing visa sponsorship?
Virginia's heavy federal contracting sector introduces one important consideration: many roles require security clearances, and non-citizens face eligibility restrictions for clearances, which can limit the pool of sponsoring employers. Focusing on commercial technology firms, cloud providers, and contractors with unclassified project work tends to yield more accessible sponsorship opportunities for international software architects. The Department of Labor's prevailing wage determinations for Northern Virginia reflect the region's high cost of living, so employer wage offers for sponsored roles are generally competitive with the market.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software architect jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
