Why This Role Matters
Our engineering teams build primarily in a modern, composable architecture while continuing to support and evolve legacy components where needed. This role sits directly within a sprint team as the technical architect for the solutions being delivered.
We are looking for a Software Architect who enjoys both designing systems and contributing to them. Someone who can think strategically about architecture, guide sound technical decisions, and also step into the codebase to help move delivery forward.
This role carries clear design authority within the team’s domain. You will shape technical direction, guide solution design, and influence how work is executed - while working collaboratively across engineering and product.
- Serve as the embedded technical architect within a sprint team
- Design scalable, maintainable solutions aligned to our broader platform direction
- Contribute meaningful production code as part of ongoing delivery
- Make and guide key architectural decisions within your domain
- Set clear technical standards and hold the team accountable to them
- Partner closely with your Engineering Manager and Product Manager to drive well-designed, executable solutions
- Engage with other Software Architects and enterprise-level leaders to align patterns and practices across teams
- Contribute to platform evolution and system health beyond individual stories
The Environment You'll Work in
- Frontend: Angular, React, TypeScript, Next.js
- Backend: Node.js, Java, REST APIs
- Eventing: Kafka
- Cloud: AWS (EC2, S3, CloudFormation, Lambda)
- Tooling: Jenkins, Bitbucket, Jira, Dynatrace, Snyk, AI-assisted development tools
- Platform: Composable microservices architecture with select Hybris-powered components
Most new development happens within our modern stack, while legacy areas are maintained and evolved thoughtfully.
Why This Role Is Compelling
- You will have real authority over solution design within your team
- You will balance architectural thinking with hands-on contribution
- You will influence cross-team practices through collaboration
- You will help define and reinforce engineering excellence in practice
- Your decisions will directly impact delivery speed, system quality, and developer experience
What We're Looking For
- Strong hands-on coding experience in JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, or Java
- Proven ability to design and implement scalable distributed systems
- Experience operating as a technical leader within a sprint-based delivery model
- Comfortable making difficult technical calls and standing behind them
- Ability to raise standards while maintaining strong working relationships
- Strong communication skills and confidence partnering across engineering and product
- Pragmatic thinking that balances long-term architecture with near-term delivery
What You Won't Be Doing
- You won’t be limited to documentation or design reviews without delivery impact
- You won’t be isolated from the sprint team or the codebase
- You won’t be expected to solve challenges alone without collaboration
- You won’t be operating in a purely theoretical architecture environment
The Kind of Architect Who Thrives Here
- You enjoy both designing and building
- You make clear decisions and explain the reasoning behind them
- You push for strong patterns without overpowering collaboration
- You think about platform health, not just feature completion
- You take pride in helping teams execute at a higher level
If you are looking for a role where you can shape architecture, contribute directly to delivery, and influence how teams build software, we’d love to talk.

Which companies sponsor visas for software architects in Illinois?
Several large Illinois-based employers have consistent histories of sponsoring software architects through H-1B and other work visas. These include Motorola Solutions, Zebra Technologies, Allstate, Boeing, United Airlines, Hyatt, and major consulting firms like Accenture and Infosys operating out of Chicago. Financial technology companies and large hospital systems such as Northwestern Medicine also appear regularly in sponsorship filings for architecture-level engineering roles.
Which visa types are most common for software architect roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is by far the most common visa category for software architect positions in Illinois. Software architect roles generally qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Candidates already in the U.S. on OPT or STEM OPT sometimes transition into H-1B status through employer sponsorship. The O-1A is an option for architects with demonstrated exceptional achievement, though it is less commonly used.
Which cities in Illinois have the most software architect sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of software architect sponsorship activity in Illinois. The broader metro area extends hiring into suburbs including Schaumburg, Naperville, Lisle, and Downers Grove, where large corporate campuses for technology and consulting firms are concentrated. Outside the Chicago metro, opportunities are limited. Candidates targeting Illinois sponsorship should focus their search on Chicago and the collar counties.
How to find software architect visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and filters software architect roles in Illinois by employers with active sponsorship histories. Because sponsorship willingness is not always stated in job postings, using a platform like Migrate Mate that surfaces verified sponsoring employers saves significant time. Filtering by Illinois and the software architect role on Migrate Mate gives you a targeted list of opportunities without sorting through postings from companies that do not sponsor.
Are there state-specific factors that affect software architect sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois does not impose state-level visa sponsorship requirements beyond federal rules, but a few practical factors matter. The Chicago metro's high concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters means many roles fall under large-employer H-1B filing patterns, which affects prevailing wage determinations. Illinois also has a strong university pipeline through University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern, which feeds OPT talent into local employers who are already experienced with sponsorship transitions for engineering roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software architect jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
